I put in a new battery and mistakingly put the battery backwards. I caught it almost instantly after I turned on the power switch. Now. it won't charge. I heard a crackling behind the dash, but can't find any melted wires, and the regulator looks fine that's mounted on the firewall. When it's running there is no voltage coming to the alternator from the harness to start it charging.

Any hints on what part or wire got fried??

You probably fried the alternator. Did that once on a 12 volt convertion on a tractor, as soon as I hooked up the battery the alterantor starting smoking.

Is it an Alternator or a Generator? Old generator systems could live with that. Modern Alternator systems don't like it.

Well Paul what would have happened is the power from your battery could have went through the frame ground and back up through the alt to the bat again and may have cooked the diodes and more out of it. If the reg is mechanical it may be saved if it's electronic might be cooked perminently. Do you have a Ammeter? Might have only burned it out and saved everything else. If it burned out there would be no charging as the current must come through it. Check for bat voltage at both sides of ammeter first, if there is get it running and use a jumper to apply bat voltage to the alt field terminal and see if it charges.

Yeah the ammeter I didn't think of that! I checked the regulator and alternator and all the wires, that just might be it. I'll keep you posted.
