I've got a Cat 951B what's throwing out a lot of oil, and smokes really bad. I've been thinking of doing a complete engine overhaul on this thing.

Does anybody have any suggestions, warnings, or just plain helpful information?

I’m planning to do a sleeve and piston drop in, changing rod bearings, main crankshaft bearing and seals, plus all the gaskets. Will also have someone look at the head for me, probably get the valves reseated.

Anything I’m missing? Let me know I’d love to hear from you.

Forgot to mention to clean out the liner counter bores and clamp down the liners and check the projection. More on that later too.

Look things over carefully as you take it apart. You might be able to clean up the liners with a Flex Hone, one like a brush with balls of grinding stone on the brissles. Provided they have no gouges in the bores. Take the pistons off the rods and sandblast the ring grooves clean and re ring them. Use the part# on the piston to march the rings you buy. Keep track of the way the pistons where on the rods. There is a V on the piston top and one on the block. They need to be lined up or the valve relief will not be under the valves and the engine will not turn over. Also there is a part# on the back of the bearings match them up too incase the crank is undersize. Lift out and clean the tappets and then roll the engine over and inspect the cam lobes for chipping. When you put it together you need to time the ballancer shafts in the bottom. With the plate on and pan off, run two 3/8" bolts up the holes into them to lock them in the down position. Put a timing bolt into the flywheel to hold it on TDC#1 and then put up the oil pump and the gears will be in time. If you take the engine out, the engine and trans need to be alligned or the drive biscuits will rip out in a week. We will get into that when you are ready to do it.
