I have been thinking about buying a used small skidsteer, I would like to get one with a small gas engine(Kohler, Onan, Tecumseh, Briggs, etc.) because I work in a small engine shop and can get the parts at discount and have most of the tools to work on the engine. I also don't need a very big skidsteer, want to use it for removing snow, moving some dirt and stone, making ATV trails, clearing brush and some landsacaping around the house, also want to be able to tow it with my 1/2 ton pickup. Any suggestions on makes and models? What prices are they going for? Best places to look for used machines? Thanks, Ash

I owned a HydraMac 6C for 25 years. Good little skid loader with an Onan motor. Only had one arm so easy to get in or out of. Powerfull little guy, would go through a 72" tall x 40" wide door for cleaning out barns. Weight was about 2200 pounds with out operator and bucket. Sold it for $2000 and could have sold it several times over since then.

I found a Bobcat 371 for sale in the local paper. I called the guy and he said it runs and works good, he wants to get a bigger one. It has a 20hp Wisconsin (runs good with plenty of power), the orginal 14hp Kohler went bad. Has one lift cylinder that leaks a little, I forgot to ask about the tires. I will be looking at it tomorrow. It also has 2 buckets, 1 is 36" and the other is 5'. Any suggestions on what to look for on it? What would be a good price for this machine (ball park figure). It sounds like it was used to clean barn stalls before this guy bought it and he is using it to move snow, dirt and do some digging. Thanks for any help, Ash

Anything that I have used with a loader has been hand controlled. I noticed that the Bobcats have foot controls for the loader. How is that to get use to? I did talk to a few people that have Bobcats around here and they really like them. What are the different drive systems for skid steers? I know most have hydro drive, hydro transmission, or do some run a pump on the engine going to the controls to hydro wheel motors with chains driving the front wheels? I seen a couple of old Melroe skid steers that looked like they had a snowmobile clutch and belt set up. Thanks for all the advice! Ash

Bought a 2002 Thomas 105 Skid steer w/54" bucket and 1000lb lift. Plowed snow like it was nothin' without chains. Digged a 25' pond in back yard and it worked great. Picked this unit because it weighs 3200lbs dry. 30HP 4 cyl. diesel. Bought a duel wheel 5000lb cap. trailer and hauled it upstate to my farm with a 4.7 liter V8 Dodge Dakota pick-up. A great machine for the buck!

How do the controls work on the Thomas 105 (hand, foot control)? How much do they go for? Where can you get parts,I never seen a dealer around here (Central New York State? Who makes the engine? Sounds like a good skid steer. Thanks, Ash

Ash,
I have a Bobcat 520 which is a little bigger then 371. The machines have the power to do what you are asking them to do. But at first you may need to learn some tricks on how to angle the bucket, move without jerking around. Teeth on a bucket are great. also a good set of tires. Its surprizeing the number of people that will ask "whaz ya going to do with that pile of dirt?" Then ask if they can have it. 520's Production years 76-77,weight 3000#, max Lift 800# 48in bucket and 20-25hp. Also look for ones that have aux. hydraulics to run a grapple if your going to be moving brush. Price for the 520 about 4000. By the way the number of times (at first), I put its noise in the dirt, I would look for R.O.Ps, Height to Bucket Hinge Pin is something else you will want to know.

Steve

Bobcat 371, 14HP koler engine, about 2000lbs. But if your a big person you will not fit in the seat well. I jsut redid an engine on one a week or so ago. Neat little toys. Only problem is 500lbs max lift.

I second that choice. I bought a 371 Bobcat last spring to did out a flat spot in the back yard to put in a huge above ground pool (wife didn"t want the Farmall back there messing up her landscaping). It has a 34" bucket and it took some time but got it done and very pleased. I was then asked to dig a 5 foot deep garden pond for someone who bought a farm (city folks) next to us so I bought a tooth bar for the bucket and it made a world of difference as far as digging capability, I think I could have gone to China if I wanted to keep digging. It has a quick-tach (bob-tach it"s called I think) bucket so you can put on a larger one for snow but I had my b-in-law make me 1 foot extensions for each side and they work great.

I think the 371 stopped production in 1978 or so and they switched to the 310 as the smallest model of Bobcat which should also be a good machine but I have no first hand experience with them. You can usually find 1 or 2 371 units on Ebay at any one time, they sell in the $3,000 range. I bought mine from the local JD dealer and paid $3,200.

A friend has a Case 1816B or 1816C (Higher letter is newer I think) and it is a nice machine too. Mine has a Kohler k321 engine, his has a Tecumseh. Mine has foot controls for the arms & bucket, his has all controls on the hand grips. I think either machine would be fine for you.
