Cat D7f bumping out of gear going up steep hills

A couple of months back I purchased a 1974 D7f with a powershift transmission. I've been using it to clear some property I've bought. I've noticed that it pushes really well downhill, flat, or on a mild incline. However, often if I try to drive it forward up a really steep incline it will pop out of gear and I won't be able to get it back in any gear for a half a minute or so. On the other hand it will back right up the same steep hill with no problem. The transmission reads as full and after I noted the problem I even topped it off to slightly over full. I was wondering if this is some type of built in safety mechanism or if anyone had encountered this before. Thanks for any help.

I believe you are low on oil. Cat recommended to run 10% over full when working on steep inclines.

Bob, Thanks - I didn"t know that for sure but I had tried overfilling it a little and it seemed to greatly decrease the frequency of the problem. Knowing that, I can probably up it a little more even. I"m adding tranny juice fairly regularly anyway as I have a bit of a leak - but since I"m just using it around the farm I don"t figure it"s worth messing with. I appreciate the input. I am not sure about the F but the E had a large oring around the trans pump suction line at the bottom of the trans where it mounted to the bevelgear case. I wonder if it's leaking and when you go up hill the oil level gets below it. I trust you are checking the trans oil level running at low idle.
Later Bob
