i have a JD 2010 DIESEL crawler 4 cyl eng. I used to go start it and run it awhile every month or so to keep it lubricated. But, this summer i started it one hot day and then came back the next day to load it on a trailer and it started and died.- suddenly. It has never started since. Now i must tell you that the glow plugs have long been unusable. What i would do is crank it without turning fuel on to get oil in the bearings and then give it a puff of starter fluid and it would start up and run every time. ( in Texas without real cold weather.)

But now I can cant even get a pop or puff out of it even with starter fluid (ether/pentane). I just run the battery down cranking the engine.
I dont have a repair manual yet. The injector pump appears to be working

Does this sound like a timing problem?? I dont want to have to tear the whole front end off if its something else. Help.

My Dad had a Case450 that did much the same. After several days deciphering,it turned out to be a semi-sheared keyway in the cam gear. Took a bit to find, but it wouldn't run out of time.Good Luck. Tim

Sounds like you suddenly have no compression - no timing - like the camshaft quit turning or the crankshaft split behind #1. Pull the rocker cover and see if the valves are moving.

I've seen many of those generation engines get ruined by ether use - but they don't all-of-a-sudden quit from it. Usually, with an immediate shut-down as I think you are describing, the injection pump set-up and sheared the pump drive-shaft. The shaft is designed like a fuse, and made to break if it turns too hard. Try cracking some injector lines and see if any fuel is coming out. If you ascertain that fuel is getting to the pump, but not coming out of it - check to see if the pump is actually turning. Take the timing window off and crank the engine. You should see movement in half of the window. If not - the pump is not turning. If the pump is set up, it's not worth fixing. Try shopping around for an exchanbe unit. When they get stuck, the head and rotor are ruined - and the price of just that assembly is usually the same as an exchange pump - sometimes more.

sounds like engine has blown up. had you been welding on it? Sometimes a bad ground will cause arcing between bearings & crankshaft & it will never run til motor is overhauled.
