I've often wondered how operators used to deal with the 4 stick set up, got on a Dynahoe once that had 4 sticks and the the knobs were the size of a cue ball, hard to master. I seems that you have to keep both levers under the control of each hand, use your fingers to move each, the knobs were certainly big enough. Kind of uncomfortable, might be a matter of preference, but joystick is so much easier. It is hard to adapt and you have to be careful as you don't have the same control you have when using levers that are familiar to you. I rented a Cat 420 D last spring and the controls were reversed, I had to call the rental house up and ask where to find the switch, ( outside of the cab, behind the rear wheel ) just could not be productive with the controls reversed and this was a paying job, time was costly. Used to switch between a 977-L and 980 wheel loaders and the sticks were reversed, at first it was tough, but eventually I became ambidextrous, but that was just two levers reversed between machines. The only other one I can recall was a foot swing, has a pedal for the swing mechanism, Case made these, hard to get used to, but I think after awhile not too bad once you get the coordination part of it.
