530CK power steering problems

Since I got the tractor running a few months ago I've been fighting steering problems. Right now it seems to be steering by armstrong.

What I have done so far is rebuild the power steering pump (did that while rebuilding the engine), replace the steering cylinder gland and piston seals, and replaced the manual steering pump shaft seals.

The last thing I did was the steering cylinder rebuilds. The symptoms prior to rebuilding the cylinders was always having to turn the steering wheel to the right to keep going in a straight line along with using both arms to make it turn.

All thats left is the steering control valve and the insides of the manual steering pump. I'm trying to figure out which to tackle first.

With the engine turned off the manual pump does turn the wheels, not very easily but it does turn them which makes me think the manual pump is probably ok, or at least in reasonable condition.

The last symptom is you can feel a pulsating while holding the steering wheel which makes me wonder if the shuttle in the steering control valve isn't bouncing back and forth.

Any thoughts or suggestions as to what the problem really is?!!!

Thanks,

Brad

Hi Brad. If you"re experiencing heavy steering it would suggest to me that the pump is not delivering it"s full flow to the system. Not all P/S systems have one but there could be either a relief valve or priority valve off it"s seat somewhere, diverting partial flow away from the valve. Also check things like suction strainers, pipes, hoses and unions for possible damage or blockages. If you can move the wheels even fractionally without the engine running it would indicate that the manual backup pump is OK. Don"t worry too much about it being heavy, it"s usually only a tiny little pump and doesn"t give you much help.
I really don"t know what would cause the steering to pulsate like that, sorry.
Hope this is of some use, JV3CII

JV3CII, thanks for the reply. The pressure relief valve is the one thing inside the pump I didn't look at while replacing the seals. That was dumb wasn't it?!

I'm not sure pulsating is really the best way to describe it although if it is the pressure relief valve it could be a symptom of it opening and closing slightly, possibly indicating a bad spring. The parts catalog doesn't show a breakdown of the relief valve but maybe its something I can clean out.

I'll check it out in the next day or so.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Brad
