I'm just wondering if someone can help me. I'm looking to bring a 1953 T6 out of retirment. The crawler has been sitting in our machine shed for approximatlly 9 years without being started, when it was parked it was in good running condition. I'm bringing it back to service as it needed some undercarriage work and I've finally found all the parts I need. What I'm wondering is, what is the best way to start the engine? Should I be putting some lubrication on the top of the pistons to help for possibly dry cylinders? Any other things I could do to aid in starting? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Brought an IH 250 back to life after sitting for 4 years by pumping the oil into the oil pressure gallery. I filled the oil pan up to the full mark using this method.
After sitting a long time, you run the risk of a "dry start" which is where the bearing inserts will have what looks like a highly polished spot on them which is really the sign that the bearing ran hot due to lack of lube and was one moment away from scoring. This is the best case, the worst case is where you score the insert.
I have a carb, NOS for a T6.

If you can pull it with something with plucs out and get the oil pressure up for a bit it should start fairly easy after doing this

Hi. The T6 is a petrol engine isn't it? I've found in the past when starting petrols that've been standing a while, that wetting the bores with two stroke petrol mixture (mixed a bit richer than normal) and having a spare set of clean dry spark plugs around usually does the trick. Take the plugs out, pour in a bit of mix and gently spin the engine a couple of times. Replace the plugs and give it a try. If it's going to work at all, it'll work well.
Some diesels can be primed with clean engine oil. IF you can get it into the cylinder in the first place (not easy on a lot of larger machines). Pull the stop control and spin a few times with the starter, drop the stop control and try it.
If there's any sign of corrosion in the bores, youre better off in the long run stripping the engine down and cleaning everything (chances are that the rings have stuck anyway).
Cheers, JV3CII.
