Help! I need some advice in purchasing a late 90's midsized dozer. I have an early 70's 850 Case that should've been retired long ago. It's the only dozer that I have owned, but I have had a chance to operate others for short periods. I like Cats, but cannot afford one. I've been looking at the Komatsu's but I am confused on the different models: 31, 32, 37, 38, and 39. It seems that the 31's are the same size as my 850. I'm using it primarily for driveways, backfill, and ponds. I know that I like a wide track with a joystick steer. Please give me your advice on what I need. Thanks.

Check out the D41,or D37...the 41s are popular,& probably the size you need. The D41P is a swamp version.

I'm no expert on Komatsu dozers, but I've been hanging out at this forum for a few years now. I've learned that Komatsu is one of the very best brands, just as good as Cat in fact (if not better in some cases). Globally they are a huge and successful company, Cat's biggest competitor, and even outsells Cat in many markets. As far as quality, they're made in Japan, a nation that's obviously been engineering and manufacturing fine machines of all types for many years. I think of Komatsu to crawlers as Toyota/Honda are to cars. I've never heard anyone here on this forum (or anywhere else) say they are junk, most everyone agrees (that has owned them) they are excellent machines.

I would just try out several sizes/types you think might fit the bill and then pick one you like. Plus be aware that some of the Komatsu machines are "grey market" which means they were originally made and sold in Japan, but then were later imported for sale used (they usually have Japanese Kanji writing on them if they are). Sometimes parts availability for these machines can be a bit more complicated, but apparently are still available from what I've heard. But in return these machines usually sell at a healthy discount when compared to their domestic counterparts.

Of course take or hire an expert familiar with these machines to check it out before you write the check. Good luck...
