I HAVE A 1957 420 CRAWLER THAT THE REVERSER QUIT WORKING ON. IN FORWARD, EVERYTHING IS FINE. WHEN SHIFTED INTO REVERSE SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT, THE MOTOR JUST PULLS DOWN AND THE CRAWLER DOES NOT MOVE.MY REVERSER IS ON THE LEFT SIDE. MY REPAIR MANUAL ONLY SHOWS A REVERSER ON THE RIGHT SIDE THAT IS NOTTING LIKE MINE. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHATS GOING ON WITH IT.

Are you sure it is a 420?? That said if you had a 420 shop manual in the manual under Direction reverser it says "Excessive travel of coupling in reverse position allows engagement of both the direct drive member and reverse drive at the same time" That sounds like your contition in two gear at once. But if your handle is on the left and a short handle coming from the dash stand then you have a 430 or 440. and they are a completely different reverser,it still could be adjustment. If you own one of these machine you should invest in a shop manual most times everything you need to know is in there. Email me for a link to my site

I think the reversers (shuttles) on the early JD's are a weak link in the design. We have 3 and only one works properly. One quit altogether and was disconnected, the other won't back up unless you doubleclutch it. They have the levers in different places on different models but work the same. I'm not about to tear one down as long as I can back up by hook or krook which you will need to do, most likely. As long as you still have a reverse gear you are as well off as you would be in a Cat D2. The shuttle is a great boon to productivity as long as they work, but...
