I am thinking about buying a 450B and wanted to get some of ya'll's opinion on its quality. I realize that would depend on its condition but the one I am looking at is in good working condition. It has only had two owners. The state of Georgia Forestry commission and the fellow who owns it now. This 450B has the manual blade adjustment with the large arms that stick out beside the tracks. Just wanted to hear from any of you who are familiar with this machine and it capabilities. Thanks for your time.

Just adding a little on top of what the other guy stated. We sold 350s and 450s new, and the 450 series held up much better. The crawlers we sold to loggers and quarriers took an awful beating, and we'd get a lot of 1010s and 350s with cracked side-frames, cracked track frames, transmission cases, steering-clutch housings, blown reversers, etc. Rarely ever saw it happen with a 450. The first 450s were underpowered, but the early 450Bs had bigger engines, and the late 450Bs also had turbos - both were fine on power. Deere Company had a class-action lawsuit against them for every 450 and 2010 series crawler they ever made with the HL-R to correct a problem with it taking off in neutral. So, the one you're looking at should of been fixed. If it was, there will be a neutral gate sawed into the four-speed quadrant for the gear-transmission. One thing you ought to check that would not be immediately apparent is the oil pressure at low engine speed once the engine is good and warmed up - like after it's run for half an hour. Very often 450s get in-frame engine jobs including sleeves, pistons, main and rod bearings, oil pump, but . . . not the balancing shafts or bushings. So, the such engines with worn shafts will hold good oil pressure until the entire engine gets good and hot, and then often it will drop to near zero at low speed. That's one thing you don't see with the three cylinder 350s because they don't have balancers. 3, 5, 6, and 8 cylinder engines don't have the balancing problem that four cylinder engines have.

The 450 series was a good all purpose machine. They can do alot of work given time. The B says it's going to be an early 70's vintage, also it has dry steering clutches which is not entirely a bad thing they just require more maintenance than later wet clutch models. The outside mounted blade frame is actually the strongest design JD had, the hoses that run across the tracks to the cylinders are apt to get torn off. Best to park a dry clutch machine in a shed and operate the machine often, moisture if it can get in the clutch housings will cause rust which in turn glues the entire clutch pack into one solid mass and it will no longer steer.

JD 450B steering clutch/brake replacement? in reply to JCSinGA, 02-03-2006 15:26:46
It looks like I will need to replace the brake bands and clutches on my 450B dozer soon. Only one side is giving trouble, but while I am into it I might as well replace both sides. Can I do all this from the top access cover, or do I have to tear things down further. Any advice on how to do this will be appreciated.
