What engine,if its a Leyland it will have the injector pump on the right,if its a Perkins it will be on the left,is the pump in line or rotary,if its in line the pipes comes off the top and the plate should say Simms,if its rotary it will be CAV,come back and I"ll try to help.

Just to clarify my last reply. Sitting in the machine the injector pump is on the right so I'm assuming it is a Perkins rotary pump and CAV is marked on the tag.

Thanks again.

You got a Leyland 3.8 engine which is the standard engine for the 3C II,CAV rotary pumps from about 74/5 on.you say the engine stalled out on you but it did not run out of fuel,do the easy things first.take the top off the priming pump and clean the pump body and gauze filter, then fit a new fuel filter, open the bleed screw on top of the fuel filter and the two bleed screws on the injector pump, prime the pump till clear fuel comes from the filter bleeder and then close it,prime the more till clear fuel comes from the bottom screw on the pump and close it,do the same when clear fuel comes from the top screw, after you close the screw continue on pumping till the lever goes limp, with all the injector lines loosened a couple of turns at the injectors crank the engine over till fuel spurts out, tighten the pipes and it should start, the injector pipes to loosen go from the pump into the side of the injectors not the top,the top pipe that connects to each injector is only a return for the leak off and it does no good to try to bleed it there.
Good luck
AJ

Help AJK !!
I have a JCB 3C II loader+backhoe and i cant correctly identify the engine. Although branded a JCB 3C II, the name plate attached to the frame LHS front indicates a Nuffield Tractor 4/65. It has a 4 cyclinder diesel
Model number 65B/1 120121. the engine has stamped lowerblock LHS: CCJ 1014. (it has a fleur-de-li symbol stamped on the block near the above number)
the back of the head has stamped:498PS 1777 31767
86K6225.
The injection pump is a CAV rotary on the RHS (viewed from the drivers seat) the fuel filter is above the injection pump. the fuel lift pump is on the LHS.
I am sure its not a Perkins but probably a BMC or Leyland Diesel. But which type..capacity etc ( is it a 4/98 or another type )

Greeting from sunny Sydney Austrlia
Greg.

The injector pump is on the right and the pump is rotary. It states CAV.

Thanks for any information you can provide.

Thanks for your suggestions on trouble shooting the problem I was having with my JCB 3CII. They were very helpful. The main problem was the filter in the fuel tank was plugged. Seems to be running fine again now.

Thanks again,AJ and JV - for the tips.

Cec

On the CAV pumps where the fuel line from the filter enters, remove the fuel line and union into pump, you will find a 'last chance filter' this can be removed with a pick or small screwdriver. If this is blocked or even slightly dirty this will cause it to be hard to start and will give you poor acceleration. I ended up replacing the one in mine and it made a huge difference.

Hi Cecil. Sounds very much like a 4/98 Leyland engine. Generally a better engine than a Perkins, but can be just as much of a sod to bleed. According to a Leyland 472 manual (same engine), you only need to bleed at the injector pump. Experience has taught that this is bo**ocks and that you will definetely need to do as AJ says and bleed at the injector as well.
I think I'd give the air cleaner element a blow out as well, just in case... As a thought, when you replace the fuel filters, use a CAV 796 instead of a 296 for the secondary filter. It's the same filter mesh, but twice the size and takes a hell of a lot longer to choke up. I've done this on a few machines in the past. If you can persuade the driver to handle fuel sensibly and change the primary filter regularly then a secondary can last up to 8,000hrs (on a county 974 forestry tractor no less!!), or roughly one complete overhaul cycle.
Cheers, JV.
