Over the past few days, I have posted a few questions on this website about a 1985 480D Case backhoe. I thought this was a popular machine! I have not received the first commint. These questions are important to me before I purchase. If no one can answer my questions, can someone please direct me to a website that can help me?

In regard to your question about the hydraulic pump location, I believe it's mounted in front of the engine at the bottom of the radiator just like the older 480s and 580s. Just pull the front radiator grille out to look. In regard to price - at least around my area - any diesel backhoe that runs and digs halfway decent, even from the 1960s, is bringing $10,000 and up. I get the rare chance, once in awhile to buy one for $5000 or $6000 - but like I said, it's rare. Sometimes the real big ones go cheaper. My neighbor has a monster Case - 780D I think that he's been trying to sell cheap for a long time - but nobody seems to want it. I think that's because it's so heavy and hard to truck, and also it is too slow on the road to drive anywhere. Even the little hoes, like Ford 4000s, Case 320s, or Deere 300s are bringing over $5000 most of the time. My local Deere dealer has a 480D Case for sale and he's asking $15,999. I wouldn't mind having it for $6000 or $7000, but if I offered that they'd laugh me out of the place.

The 480's are/were much scarcer than the 580's or 680's, so that's probably why no one has said much about them. But Case makes great backhoes, they're pretty much considered the gold standard. If you're looking at a machine and are considering buying it, I would hire/bribe/ask an experienced Case mechanic to go look it over for you. Even if he hasn't seen a 480 before I'm sure he'll know what to look for. Also search this site, type in "480" and variations on that theme (i.e. 480A, 480B, 480C etc) and read old posts. Plus you can go to the link referenced below and see what people are asking for them. Also check the completed auction results on that same website to see what they've sold for in the past. Overall if the machine's in good shape, everything works, the price is right, and you like it - then get it!

good luck
