I have a backhoe that was given to me. It is pretty much worn out. However, does anyone have an idea on what would be the problem with my transmission? It seems to run ok in forward in low range. will not pull up a slight grade in reverse and even choked the motor out in trying to do so. when in high range it will pull but only on a downward grade. Is this a clutch only issue? I am new to heavy equipment but am learning. I am also looking for a GOOD reputable used parts dealer for it if anyone knows of such a location. Thanks in advance for your reply, Wayne

Check oil level first, engine off , backhoe up and locked , loader just off the ground, like you would drive it down the street.. Oil nasty ?? change it, also vertical filter can underneath.. Put a guage in the reverser control valve..rear cover , plug facing down..Should read approx. 135 lbs..1/2 throttle , gearshift in neutral , moving reverser lever forward and backward...With reverser lever in forward , run the engine speed to idle speed , then run it to wide open throttle, Does the oil pressure fluxuate widely?? If so maybe the transmission relief valve has some crap stuck in it..Clean it out. and retry.. There that should keep you busy for a while..Let us know if that helped or you need some more assistance.....R.S.

you didn"t mention whether you were in hi or lo range when you were pulling in reverse. when pulling you should have the tractor in lo range. the only time i run my tractor in hi range is when i"m moving from site to site. or under no load. if it runs ok in low range, there shouldn"t be anything wrong with your clutch.

I"m sorry that I didn"t include that the tractor was in low range when I was trying to back it up. It was when I was in transit moving it from the location that it was in to my house that ii was discovered that it will not pull itself in high range. Thanks again for your reply. Wayne
