I purchased my AG4 a few yewars ago. It ran then, though it needs some work. My primary concern is to have a working machine, but I don't want to ruin it in the process. I have two manuals (Oliver Cletrac Parts Book for Model 15, 20C &AG and Instruction Manual for Cletrac Model AG. They are supposedly the original ones for this particular crawler, but I want to check the serial number to be sure. The indentification plate on the firewall has been painted over and needs to be cleaned so I can verify the serial number. I've found some indentification plates are merely painted or decals. How do I restore the plate without ruining it? And yes, this is my very first project.

Thanks in Advance,
John Boggs

Try soaking it (the ID plate) with some nail polish remover, paint thinner, or paint remover.
Dab a small spot with cotton and see what softens and removes the paint best. Take your time and don't use anything more abrasive than a scrubbie from the kitchen sink so as not to scratch it.

It sounds to me like you have the right books.
You probably have the 4"x4 1/2" Hercules engine, Model OOC I think. There is a lot of info on:
