Could someone give me the approximate year and maybe a comparison of a Caterpillar 955L #85J and a Caterpiller 955 #1962? I am looking at both of these machines and they seem in about the same shape.

The second machine confuses me. Is that the year 1962?

Well, that confused me too. That is what he says it is. The year is supposedly 1977. Any idea on the 955L?

Thanks. The SN for the 955L is 85J5573. The SN for the 955 is 60A873. I would really appreciate finding out the production dates of these machines.

Thanks again,
Steve

They are good machines if they have always been repaired right. Make sure the sprockets are tight no side to side movement, the final drives full of oil and the seals not leaking. The idlers shouldn't be out near the end of the track frames or you will need some under carrage work $oon. They should be back about 4". Check the idlers and bottom rollers are not worn out at their shafts. It would be nice if there is not a lot of cracks welded up or otherwise on the machine. The 4 bucket pins and bushings will likely be worn a bit but the rest of the pins and bushings in the lift arms and linkage should not have too much wear. Watch out for broken or loose rear engine mounts Leaks anywhere. Run it and see how it runs, should steer with a light pressure on the peddals.

Go with the 85J machine. The 60A is a good machine too but some trans parts are discontinued now and it will only get worse. Sounds like he meant the year when he said 1959. The L machine is likely a mid 70's machine.
