Just bought a used jcb3cx

I need help! this thing is leaking all over. there is oil pouring out of a hole in the extendahoe. there is oil pouring out of the chassis up by the pto pump.can't see where it's coming from. the king boom and hoe bucket leak down in less than a minute. the king boom swings to the left by itself. i notice that just the weight of the left control stick pushes the plunger on the valve block down about 1/8 of an inch.If i hold the stick centered it doesn't swing. So i don't know if it's the valve block or just worn out levers.The levers are pretty worn out. Can they be rebuilt?

the turbo exhaust housing is cracked off. Don't know how that happned.Looks like someone tried to weld it unsuccessfully.

Now here are the questions. IS it easy to rebuild a valve block?

Is it ok if i cap off the hydraulics to the extra dig?

Is a 3cx sitemaster nothing more than a glorified 1400b with 4in1 bucket and extra dig and 4x4?

What model and brand turbo is on it so i can get new housing?

Will a 1400b repair manual work for 3cx sitemaster?

The right side brake fluid resevoir is empty but i don't know what kind of fluid it takes. The owners manual says jcb ligh hydraulic fluid or iso bg15. I hav no clue what this is plus i dipped my finger in the left cylinder and it smells like DOT 3 which i think is no good for this machine.

I too just bought a 1988 jcb sitemaster, I was told it was a 214. A lowboy arrived with it yesterday and I've spent most of the day getting familiar with it. There is nothing on it that states 214, I didn't get a owner manual, only the lubrication diagrams. Now I'm wondering exactly what it is. Do you know if the serial number can be decoded to tell me what I own? Also, when you're facing the backhoe, there are two levers on the left side of the floor (one with a reservoir) and the other one looks like a emergency break lever. What exactly are they and when do you use them?

Thanks for any info you can give me.

hey well mine turned out to be a 86 3cx. the vin number starts out with what model it is;at least on mine. I only have a foot pedal on the floor to the right for the extendahoe. I think what u have may be controls for an automatic boom lock for traveling. I'm not sure. Hard to find a manual for this model and year.

I'm thinking a 3cx is a 1400b with all the options but i'm not sure no one has answered me on that.

Thanks Brett for the info. I've found a local JCB distributor from the JCB website, I think I'll talk to them this week and see what they say about the two levers on the floor.

Anyone know what size the hydraulic hose fitting are for the extradig on a 86 3cx. I want to cap off the feed lines.

Oh, almost forgot too - jcb3x when you say the turbo exhaust housing is cracked off, do you mean the actual turbine housing is cracked, or the piping leading into it? I just bought a 1550 and it was missing its exhaust system, the turbo was simply flowing exhaust directly out onto a crude deflector. I just finished fabricating a pipe to replace the missing one. I had a midas muffler shop weld me up a simple "L" pipe and put a slight bend in it where I needed (cost me $40). Then I blacksmithed and welded up a few brackets and mounting straps for it. Seems to work great so far - if you need pics or details on how I made it, I can post that for you no problem.

As to whether the sitemaster is similar to the 1400B, I'm just learning about the JCB's, but I do have a brochure that covers all of the various US 1980's models. I looked over the dimensions and specs for the 1400B and the Sitemaster (from a late 80's brochure) and they do look to have nearly identical specs for everything except the "extradig" hoe (which makes it a heavier machine too). Again I can scan and send this info to you if needed, but I would venture a guess a 1400B manual would probably cover your machine well (with the exception of the extendahoe).

the actual turbine exhaust housing is crackedcompletely around and the exhaust pipe is just laying there. I'm working on getting a 1400b manual from Gary.

Sounds like that machine has done a bit of work,the leak from the extendahoe is probably coming from the cylinder inside the extendahoe housing or a ruptured pipe,repair that leak as you will find the extendahoe very useful,the oil leak by the pump you will have to pinpoint,could be the seal on the input shaft,loose or leaking pipe or a crack in the chassis as it doubles for the hyd oil reservoir,if its a crack get it welded,the valve for the swing should not fall down with the weight of the lever unless the spring that keeps the valve in the neutral position is broken or gone weak or the cap is loose,the spring is in the cap on the bottom end opposite from the valve,if the valve block is not leaking around the spools leave it alone,all that can be done with that block is replace the o"rings on the spools that catch the leak-by,the cylinders that are dropping are allowing the oil to bypass the pistons inside the cylinders and need resealing.hydraulic oil for the brakes,the engine is a Perkins 4.236 for the elbow.don"t know about the manual.

Good Luck. I worked for a company in michigan in the late '70s that bought a few JCBs they got rid of them in less than one season and replaced them with deere. The only good thing I could say about them is that they had a Perkins engine. just my $.02

Greg you really seem to have a bad opinion about JCB's. What is it about them that is so bad? And I'm not trying to start a flame war or challenge your opinion, just interested in what you have experienced so I can look out for it on my machine. I just recently bought one, and although it's pretty old/well used and I haven't used it much yet, it seems to be very well built. I have read on this forum on several occasions about JCB's having electrical bugs, and I suspect at least some of that is true (based on my brief encounters with Lucas electrics on Triumphs and MG's a long time ago). But over the years reading this forum I haven't heard much anything else being bad about them really, other than normal problems associated with heavy wear/usage that would eventually happen with any old machine. Plus there are quite a few JCB's in my neck of the woods, a local contractor used one to dig my perc holes and he said he liked it, no real problems to report (and he owned millions of $$ worth of equipment from every make imaginable). A local rental agency also rents them along with Case and Deere hoes. They said the JCB's were good machines and caused them no more trouble than their Deere or Cases (although they didn't say they were better).

So I dunno, they seem alright to me, that's why I'd be interested in hearing the details of the JCB horror stories you apparently have heard or experienced, thanks.

The early ones were not reliable. for new machines they had alot more issues than the deere's and ford's at the time. the only thing they did not have trouble with was the perkins engine. Had problems with the hydraulics and electrical on all seven machines. But not at the same time. One would come back from warranty work on the hydraulics only to go back within a month with electrical problems. As I said these were some of the first out. Just my $.02
