HD 7 Question

One of the guys in my area offered to sell me an old Allis Chalmers HD 7 dozer from the 1940s. He bought it from a farmer who was using it to clear land and the bearings in the transmission were shot. He took it apart and bought the new bearings and seals but my mechanic took a look at it and said that the engine has to be removed to put the transmission together again. Another mechanic said the same thing. The owner of this dozer said he spoke to an old guy who used to work on them and was told that the transmisson can be put back together again without removing the engine. I would think that since it was possible to take the transmission apart without taking out the engine it should be possible to put in the new bearings without removing the engine. Any experts out there who can offer me advice?

I was still wondering just how he took it apart then. He was able to take out the shafts, gears and bearings through the holes in the top and rear of the transmission without removing the engine.

I'm recalling from my dad's HD 10, which is similar. We do have a shop manual but I don't have it right now.

I think HD 7 had a torque tube, the transmission case is the frame. It enclosed from the clutch to rear case. To repair the transmission you split the tractor and pullrd stuff out the front and back as well as from up top.

The engine bell housing would be the separation joint, perhaps blocking up the front of the tractor to support the engine.
