I had same problem in my JD 350 that I'm presently repairing.Clutch discs were twisted in spider and had be cut to separate. After talking to JD thought I would be better off scraping out the machine. Found out about Kuglar Salvage, phone#1-800-874-2130 and saved a bunch. Ex; clutch disc from JD-$50, Kuglar-$17. I took reverser out of machine so I could change seals, etc. Good luck

His reverser is quite different from yours - his has mechanically operated clutches, your's are hydraulic. If you've got an older 350, the weakest part is the small bearing cup and cone between the input shaft drum and the output shaft.
It was to small for heavy reverse loads (that's when it turns), and would often fail, and take the clutches along with it. Deere later offered updated parts to make it stronger with a larger bearing assembly.

Thanks for the comments, that little bearing was totally fried and fused to the shaft. I'm assuming when ordering parts they are for premodification assembly so we are still getting the dinky bearing. We'll just have to be more carefull when climbing ledge rock in reverse with the backhoe attachment on. The machine gets less than 25 hours of use per year and obtaining parts at less cost probably justifies repairing to original condition. Thanks again, Udo

Best approach is don't use reverse when the going is hard - keep the reverser in forward and use the transmission reverse instead. The hydraulic reverser is much stronger going forward. The updated parts include a new input-shaft drum which probably costs a fortune. The majority of reverser failures we had in our shop were from the little "counter" bearing melting and getting fused. Don't forget to make sure the orifice is clean and in place in the output shaft. I known of a few people buying new output shafts and intalling them, not realizing they do NOT come with the orifice. They'd put it all back together and have zero lube and release pressure.

I took a lot of them out at customers request and convertered back to direct-drive - years ago. I wish I'd save all the reversers we threw in the junkpile at the Deere dealership. As I recall, the 420s and maybe 430s had a very weak setup with a set of gears that got shifted forward-to-reverse and got jammed pretty easy unless you came to a complete stop before shifting and eased it into gear. The later machines on the 440s had a constant mesh reverser (no shifting gears) with two sets of clutches, so when you shifted you engaged one clutch pack and disengaged the other. It had big bung-plugs in it for access for adjusting the clutches. Seems you must have one of those setups, and there's no mistaking one for the other.

MY REVERSER HAS THE TWO LARGE BUNG PLUGS IN IT , AND I KNOW THAT IT HAS 2 CLUTCH PACKS IN IT, SO I MUST HAVE A 440 REVERSER IN MY 420C. THE REAR CLUTCH IS THE ONE THAT IS LOCKED UP. IS THERE ANY WAY TO GET IT UN LOCKED WITHOUT SPLITTING THE TRACTOR? IF NOT, DOES EVERY THING COME OUT THE FRONT OR THE REAR OF THE REVERSER? THANKS FOR YOUR REPLIE, YOU HAVE ALREADY HELPED ME A LOT. JUST BY KNOWING WHAT I HAVE I CAN ORDER A MANAUEL FOR IT, BUT IN WILL TAKE A WHILE TO GET HERE. THANKS,FDBYRD

If your reverse looks like the one on my '58 420U Then you need the 440 Service manual (I don't have) and the Part manual for the 420 430 series tractors PC505. The IT manual for the 420 has some information to adjust the differential (clutch) type direction reverser.
