JD 555 Crawler Transmission Overhaul help

1. Just finished reading through all the old posts on the bad things about the JD555 transmissions (a bit late perhaps)! But I have one now and it needs some transmission work.

2. The right hand steering clutch seems to be the main problem in that it is slipping real bad. Haven't done any pressure gauge tests to see if other problems might be apparant.

3. Was wondering if anyone has any suggestions a. on specific things to look for while tearing down
b. parts to replace whether they look worn/broke or not
c. Adjustments to make/verify.
d. Source of after market parts as John Deere parts do seem to dent the pocket book quite a bit.
e. Or anything relevant that you might want to add.

Thanks

Joe

P.S. I did see the post about digging a hole and driving it in and buying a CAT. Thanks, but that is not an option. It is this one or none at all.

Some of the clutch drum bushings are not sold separately. I remember ordering bushings for the engine"s timing gears, idlers. They will work. If one is not wide enough, use one and part of another to make the correct width. It"s been a long time since I"ve been in one.

elaborating on Roy S.'s suggestions ...Starting in front and working back,... the stator in the converter is fabricated from individual parts. I've seen the fins loosen and thus become variable pitched.. It almost looks like it should be that way... but they all should be tight.. In the powershift housing, check all the shafts that the clutch drums are mounted on. The older units have iron sealing rings on the shafts and wear out and at the same time wear into the shafts. There is a reclaim kit available that provides nonmetallic sealing rings and instructions for a machinist to cut new sized grooves... only if they arent too worn already. Disassemble the clutch drums completely and keep everything extremely well labeled. The pistons have some slight variations and will make things slip if installed in the wrong speed clutch pack. Also the manifolds that these shafts ride in to supply pressure oil to the clutch packs are prone to wear .. look for grooves worn into them where the sealing rings seat. dont use silicone to seal between the housings... use only Loctite anaerobic sealant. The steering clutch is pretty straight forward. I suggest you find a Deere manual for this endeavour.. One of those wannabe I&T "manuals" (if there even is one for this machine ) won't cut it. Disassemble everything and then get a parts price... then make a decision.. good luck... the eamil works .. post questions as you progress.. its been a while since I've been into one of those gems.. being a loader makes me cringe even more...

Pay particular attention to the sealing surfaces on the clutch drums.... If they're scored..Change them.....Listen for clicking noises when installing drums on the shafts...Some clicking noises aren't good..I grease them so the metal seal rings sort of stay concentric or centered on the shaft to avoid snapping rings off. I've done several of these.....I don't think I'll do any more.....They're no fun..I'll do an HLR from a 450 anytime....

I am going to need aftermarket clutches and torque convertor parts for my 550. We blew the transmission seal behind the torque convertor. We pulled the motor last weekend. We have had a problem with the transmission heating up after a couple hours, I have found metalic shavings in the filter canister so we are going into the transmission. I also did not know about the problems with the
550s ad 555s and until after we purchased one to clean up 50 acres.
