Hi everyone,

Please bear with me while I try to explain what I need.
I have a 1966 JD450 with Hi/Lo ratio/neutral lever on floor between steering levers. Model # T5E3M, ser.# 0709551.

I have just worked on the starter motor (what a beauty to work on) as part of a maintenance project. I bought this machine used a few months ago and am slowly trying to bring to spec. or better, components as I work my way through them.

I have found the wiring on this machine to be in not very good shape. I would like to replace what needs it and improve on the rest. However, I don't have an electrical schematic drawing and would find one very handy.

Is there anyone out there that could show me where to go for this electrical print or, better still, be able to email me a copy.

Thank you in advance for any help - it would be greatly appreciated.

Thx,

John

If you're looking to improve the wiring, there are few things to consider. The older 350s and 450s tend to get bad connections on the main plug-in connector in the main wiring harness just under the hood where it connects to the cowl. Such problems are often intermittent and can drive you nuts. It usually needs to be cleaned, tightened, replaced, or bypassed. Bypassing and eliminating the connector works fine; just makes it a litte more time consuming to remove the engine. Next in line is the neutal-safety switch and connector and the Motorola charging system. The later, i.e. the Motorola alternator is a low-output unit and expensive to work on. If any part of it (alternator or reg.) needs replacement, you'd be way ahead of the game to replace it with a 10 or 12SI Delco. They are redily available in the $25 price-range. In regard to the starter - since you indicated some difficulty with it - guess you don't have the special wrench for the one hard-to-get 3/8" bolt? Snap-On, Mac, OTC and Deere all sell it. Same wrench works well on the injection pump also, so it's good to have. 450 diesels used two different starters - 700 amp and 900 amp with the latter being the HD option. 700 has a step in the field-coil housing - i.e. two outside diameters - whereas the 900 amp is all one size the entire length. Since you just recently got the machine - check the 4 speed transmission shifter gate and see if a "neutral" has been ground into it. If not, check with a Deere dealer and see if you can still get the free HL-R and 4sp. update kit. Deere was involved in a law-suit ca. 1985 and was required to update every 2010 and 450 ever made because they sometimes took off in neutral. Deere spent years trying to track down every machine with the HL-R they made - but that's an impossible task.
