I have a JD 450C with a winch. Does anyone know how big of a tree this machine is rated to pull. I plan on doing some logging and was told I shouldn't use it for trees over 12" in diameter.

You have plenty of tractor no doubt - 1st. limiting factor is the cable condition and connection system - don't recomend popping logs through stump infested areas without a sound connection and roll cage with heavy grate system to keep a flying cable at bay.

Well if it is in good condition it will play with a 12 inch tree as i use to run a 450C with a winch in the oil patch and would drag tandem axel truck of a frack crew in and out of some of the nastest lease roads and we are talken about trucks that weighed in up to 70000 lbs if the 450 would not walk with them the winch would drag them thru mud over head lite deep . I was ahmaised at what it would do if the dozer started to slide back i would put the blade down and spin the tracks and build up dirt behind the tracks as a backstop and raise the ft up as far as the blade would lift it and start draggen broke many of 7/8 inch cable on that dozer.

The limiting factor is the brake on the winch, not the crawler. The same winch that is used on the 450C is also used on a few skidders, so the size of the winch is not the issue, it's the condition of the brake band. Those winches tend to get leaks, then the band gets oil on it, and then it won't hold. When you're towing, i.e. pulling logs, the brake must hold or the cable will just unreel under a load. When in good condtion, the setup will pull a 12" tree easily, and more. There's a drain plug at the side-bottom of the winch - on the dry-side where the brake and clutches are. The drain should be pulled once in awhile to check for the presence of oil. It is supposed to be dry, but as I said - they usually leak. Once the oil gets a little deep, the brake band and the clutches stop working.

I would think the winch would be matched to the tractor it was built to go on. It can likely pull harder than your tractor can on level ground.
