I have a TD 14A with water pump trouble. It will pump some of the time and not pump some of the time. I have had the pump apart and everything appears to be in working order. Anyone have any ideas of what my problem is. The radiator is open. I have already checked that. I can see with the radiator cap off when the pump starts and when it is not pumping. Dozer will cool off immediately when the pump starts.

Sounds like you're barkin' at a thermostat.

sounds like the thermostat opening and closing. Does it have one in it.

The thermostat is not in. I was wondering if it not being in could cause the problem.

First make sure the coolant level is fully topped off. Second, make absolutely certain the belt is tightened properly and is not slipping at any time. Visually verify that it is in fact spinning the pump continuously and that all belts and accessories are not seized/stopped. You might have an obstruction of some type floating around inside the cooling system, consider flushing it. Also, make sure that none of the hoses are collapsing on you (although probably unlikely in a pressurized system, but still check the pump suction side). Sometimes old hoses can delaminate inside, then internally collapse and yet give the appearance of an uncollapsed hose on the outside.

When you inspected the pump did you make absolutely sure the impeller was not loose or able to spin on the shaft under pressure? And that the bearings were in good shape and not prone to intermittent seizure?

Lastly if the coolant is surging in a way so that there is no coolant flowing one moment and then suddenly it starts flowing again, I would be very careful about that. The old TD's were known for cracking heads, which was usually associated with shock cooling and/or not allowing the machine to cool down properly before shut down. Good luck...

Thanks for the advise. The only thing I have not checked is the hoses. The radiator has been flushed and it is clear. the pump shaft is in ggod shape and the belt is tight and spinning.I will check the hoses but I was just wondering if the thermostat being out could possibly cause it to pump at times and then not pump. Possibly it could be something to do with air in the cooling system.
