Ford 555 water in power steering

I hadn"t run my 1980 555 this winter, except to start it a couple times to check the hydraulic pressure after installing a filter (ran it for less than 5 minutes). After the last time I did this, I noticed a large puddle of fluid under the PS reservoir.

I got a chance to look at it closely this weekend, and the PS reservoir was empty. (It was full in the fall.) I filled the reservoir (134 hyd. fluid) and started it up, and after a minute or two, the steering was back, and there didn"t appear to be any leaks. However, the fluid is now frothy, indicating I"ve somehow gotten water in the power steering. I also noticed that the tank was slightly pressurized when I checked the level (with the engine off, but only ran the engine for less than 2 minutes, so it was hardly warm). The coolant doesn"t appear to be oily. My neighbor said that the tank could pressurize if the fluid level is too high or too low, but this doesn"t explain the water. If there"s a PS cooler, maybe I have a leaky seal?

Any suggestions?

Thanks. JB

The froth could just be air, from low oil. If the reservoir was empty, then just filling and running, would not be enough to fill the entire system. Try refilling, and run again, then see what happens. There may be some water due to condensation, but not much. also check the level again, after you shut down.

Thanks again, Joe! I"ll check it again after filling again. Do you think it would overpressurize from being low and shoot fluid out of somewhere to basically drain the tank? So far, it"s run without leaking again, so I"m confused.

There should be a breather on the top side of PS tank, check to see if yours is clear. This could be what is causing yours to pressure up.

I actually saw the breather and moved it up & down when I first investigated the leak. Don"t know how the breather is supposed to work, but it looked like a pop-up valve on a pressure cooker.

So far, I haven"t had a bad leak since filling it back up with fluid. Maybe it was just low on fluid?

I"m still thinking it got water in there, though, because it"s still frothy after letting it set & start up. How long would it take to get air froth to settle?
