I have a small skid steer, JD24. I just broke off the idler gear shaft for the left drive side. It damaged the mount that it goes into also. Would anyone have such parts and/or a manual or a cd? What years were these made? Befor that I was not getting much speed at all out of it. How does the 'variator' work that I saw on an earlier post? Does it slip the belt to regulate speed? Lot to learn I guess...

I'm pretty sure we had a beat-up JD24 as a yard-machine at a Deere dealership I worked at around 1975. We had forks on it and it did all our heavy outside work. We also had a OTC skid-steer - and I think it was almost the same machine as the 24. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Deere got their first design from OTC. At another dealership I worked at, around 1979 we had a JD24A with an Isuzu diesel and hydrostatic drive. We had more trouble with that than the old variator-drive. Many of the first hydrostatic drive skid-steers Deere sold had an engine mis-alignment problem, and they stripped out the splined drives something awful.

I've got a tech manual for JD24..$ 25.00 plus actual freight [ US Mail ].. The variable drive works by the pulley spreading for low speed and squeezing for high speed. This changes the pulley diameter , changing the speed. Give me your mailing address and I'll get the freight charge figured out...I haven't seen many of these for used parts. I had one 10 years ago and haven't seen one since....
