On reconditioning the head the machine shop said they couldn't remove damaged glow plugs.I had been using ether but after finding broken rings would like to get plugs working.Any ideas for removal or could a single AC type plug in the intake manifold do the job?

Are they broken off? They likely don't want to get involved in anything trickey incase they mess up the threads drilling them out. It is good to have them working if you are in temps below freezing. Check into aftermarket chambers. When you get the engine rebuilt you will not need either to start if you have lots of compression and good nozzels.
