My crawler's back end is apart to replace steering clutches and brake bands. My mechanic says the groove on the drum is wear (very shallow groove the width of the band).

Could the groove be by design so the band fits in it? If it is wear, should I try to smooth it, spend the $800 for a new JD one, or buy a used one (quoted to me for $265)? I would hate to try to save a few hundred dollars if the old one is simply going to wear out the new bands quickly. Thanks

It is wear and it won't hurt a thing as long as the new brake lining fits into it. If necessary, narrow the new band a little bit, or widen the wear groove.
