I have a mid 70's 440B skidder with no number tag on the winch. This winch looks like an upsize version of the 3315 winch on my JD 350.
Does anyone know the winch number and what dozers it might be used on? It looks like the winch on a late 70's 550 that I see from time to time. Any info appreciated.

Hi Rob, I own a 3305, from a 440 skidder. I hook that winch to my farm tractor, the hydrolic pressure come from the tractor hydrolic system. The flow, from the tractor pump, run to a flow-divider, with a built-in relief valve, to the winch. The pressure is set to 1000 psi and 3 gpm. Because my farm tractor have only 540 rpm on the pto, the winch pump don't built enough pressure for the brake and clutch pressure. The winch on skidder and bull are the same, but not the same bolt on. Thanks for your reply. What I have found out is that there are a lot of parts that cross over for the 3305, 3315 and 3325 winches. Brake bands, cylinders, some clutch parts etc.. With all of the updates though, a guy would probably be wise to know exactly what he has inside of his winch before ordering anything. The system you have on your tractor sounds like what Deere used in some later applications to get a way from the 'on board' hydrualic pump.

Hi Rob, have you a rotary or a spool valve to control the winch, mine have a spool valve. I have the parts and shop manuals fo the 3305, 440 skidder winch. If you want some copy, I can Email you some. Bernard le mécano Québec Canada

Hey Bernard, Internet was down for a while so I didn't see your reply. I have the rotary valve on my skidder and the spool on my dozer. I had a service manual and recently ordered a parts book, but thanks for the offer. Rob

I can't give you specifics with part numbers and years - but we sold a lot of winches, and machines with winches at the Deere shops I worked at. Generally speaking, the early 440 and 540 skidders used the same winches the 350 and 450 crawlers had. When the 440s got beefed up, with the late "B"s, and "C"s, the winches were upgraded, but so were the winches on the 450C crawlers and up. I supect the model numbers were the same, crawler or skidder. I can tell you this for sure. I had to repair or rebuild many Deere winches - they tend to be oil leakers and have inadequate-sized brake bands. All the major repair parts were the same, from crawler to skidder. We had much more trouble with skidder winches though, that being because they'd often be hitched to 7-10 logs at a time instead of 2-3 with a crawler - and all it takes is a few drops of oil on the brake band and it would slip or "unreel." I recall there being a few winch models that hooked to the tractor's hydraulic system instead of using its own. The powerwinchs own hydraulic system was a another chronic problem. It uses a tiny little Webster hydraulic pump - same pump as used in many snow-plow setups for pickup trucks. Once the pump gets any wear, the winches won't free-spool with the engine idling and often have to be revved up to operate. Thus, the problem was eliminated in some machines by using the main tractor's hydraulic system instead.

Thanks for the reply. Yep, oil leaks and brake bands sound familiar. I'm actually looking for brake bands and trying to cross with a supplier who has listings for dozers. I'll also get him to see what crosses.
