Cost to have a 4 cylinder repacked?

Hi,

Have a Ford 723 hoe and the boom droops pretty quick. While its apart to replace bushings and pins it seemed like the perfect time to get the cylinder tight. I would like to learn what other people are paying to have it done and compare the cost of doing it myself.

About what is the cost for it to be repacked? It's a 14' model 723 with 4" cylinder. How about 2 1/2" cylinders? Yeah, the FEL lift is sagging too. Middle age is a pain...

Thanks,
jb

A ford 723 is a fairly old hoe,I have had a couple over the years,Im betting its the control spool. You can have the cyinders rebuilt Im sure it will help. But if they still drop quickly its the control spool. And then your talking big money.control spools need to be honed and plated to repair them, each spool. This takes lots of time and money. Good Luck

you need to check the cyl vs control valve for leaking. Remove one line from the cylinder, plug the line you disconnected, pressurize the line with the tractor hydralics, if the oil comes out of the cylinder where you disconnected the line, the cylinder needs to be rebuilt. If this side of the cylinder does not leak, replace the line to the cylinder, remove the other line, plug that line and test this side. This will test both directions of the cylinder travel.
For new packing and "O" ring kit replacement, find a local hydralic shop they will sell you the individual parts to repair the cylinder, you do not have to buy the cylinder kit. the prices on the below site are way out of line. You will have to take the cylinder apart and have the old parts in hand for the hydralic shop to work with you, the individual parts are normally $10 to $15 dollars. sometimes the cylinders are difficult to take apart and may not be user friendly, but there are some tips of the trade.

Remember, it could also be a leak through the valve as opposed to the cylinder packing that could cause it to sag.

One of the guys on here posted the link to this very useful seal site some time back, get the code off the cylinders so you can order the right kit,go to the link below and click on whichever size you think you have imperial or metric, look up the cylinder code and you can see the part# and price.
