I have a problem with my 580C. It started out with a little sqeal around the rear axle. The tractor would start moving and then suddenly stop like the brakes were applied. Can this be anything other than the brakes? I've pulled the brake drum housing on one side and the shoes looks fine. I know I've got to pull the disk and separate the two parts and check the balls between them.

On the right side, there is an additional part attached to the brake housing. There is a connector to a foot peddle in the cab. My manual doesn't tell me what this is. Can anyone give me any information on this and does it have to be removed before the brake housing on that side can be pulled? Any information on 580C brakes and possible causes of my problems would be appreciated. Thanks.

The other thing Is the diff lock, all you have to do is remove the bolts from it and it will slide off(One bolt is a countersunk allen head). On the brakes If you don't have enough free travel they will heat up and do as you say (self activate). Then on the other side of the puzzle if you have too much free travel they will lock when the pedal is applied. That brake system is called shoe/drum activatied disk brakes. A very sorry setup. The best way to get by is to maintain a good 1/2 to 3/4 pedal and take the self adjusters off and throw away, then put a jam nut(7/16 fine thread) on the adjuster bolt to hold it in place

Garry,

The extra thing is probably a differential lock mechanism. When activated it puts power to both wheels. My 580 CK does not have the diff lock, so when I get one tire into mud, it will spin and the other wont do anything. With diff lock on, both tires would drive so you'd have better luck getting free of the mud.

I think the ramps/balls may be worn on your machine. That would cause the brakes to lock up. Good luck
