I HAVE A 1974 JCB 3C MK II THAT I AM THE 2nd OWNER OF AND HAVE OWNED FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS NOW. IT IS A SHUTTLE TRANSMISSION AND THE SHUTTLE BOX IS FILLING UP WITH HYDRAULIC FLUID. WHEN I MEAN FILLING UP I MEAN IT IS COMING OUT THE BREATHER CAP THAT IS INSIDE THE CAB. I'M NOT SURE WHAT IS CAUSING THIS SO IF ANYONE CAN HELP I SURE WOULD APPRECIATE SOME FEEDBACK ON WHERE TO LOOK. I'M THINKING IT IS INTERNAL IN THE SHUTTLE BOX SOMEWHERE, MAYBE THE TORQUE CONVERTOR. I REALLY DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THIS WORKS EITHER. IS THE PUMP FOR THE TORQUE CONVERTOR AND STEERING ON THE RIGHT FRONT OF THE TRACTOR? IF SO, YOU FILL THE SHUTTLE BOX WITH 15W-40W OIL, WHAT DOES THAT LUBRICATE? DOES THE 15-40 OPERATE THE TORQUE CON. OR DOES THE HYD. FLUID FROM THE PUMP? ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT. THANKS ANDY

The pump is the only place where the oils can mix,its a simple gear pump you should have no trouble resealing it,it is not the easiest to get off,I had blanking off plugs to stop the oil, mark all the pipes so they go back on right, scratch a match line on the pump body before you open it so it too will go back the same, you should replace all the seals.not sure what could cause reverse to be lagging but it sounds the clutch is not engaging as quick as it should so it makes the control valve a suspect.I am in the UK and have worked on those machines but that was over 30 years ago and my memory of them is fading and I don"t have a manual to refresh it.

If you have a tandem pump one section for the steering and the other for the shuttle it maybe that the steering oil is leaking into the shuttle and over filling it,the steering oil is fed off the main hydraulic tank, the shuttle has its own ATF oil.the single pump will have 3 pipes if you have more pipes you have a tandem.you will need to remove the pump and have it repaired or replaced.

AJK, THANKS FOR THE INPUT. IT APPEARS TO BE A TANDEM PUMP AS YOU SAY BECAUSE IT HAS 4 HOSES GOING INTO IT. THE FRONT PART OF THE PUMP RUNS THE SHUTTLE (ONE LINE GOES NEAR THE FILTER ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE SHUTTLE AND THE OTHER GOES TO THE BOTTOM LEFT SIDE OF THE SHUTTLE). THE BACK PART RUNS THE STEERING (ONE LINE GOES TO THE STEERING RELIEF VALVE AND THE OTHER GOES TO THE HYD. TANK, WHICH I ASSUME IS THE MAIN FEED FOR THE STEERING). IS THIS PUMP EASY TO REBUILD? DO YOU THINK THAT IT IS JUST A SEAL INSIDE? I HAVE THE SERVICE MANUAL FOR THIS MACHINE AND THE BREAKDOWN OF THE PUMP AND I AM POSITIVE I CAN DO IT MYSELF. I REBUILT THE STEERING UNIT UNDER THE STEERING WHEEL AND IT WAS SIMPLE. HAVE YOU EVER REBUILT ONE? IS THERE ANYTHING THAT COULD BE WORN INSIDE THAT I COULD NOT REPAIR MYSELF? I WILL CHECK THE FILTER FIRST AND MAKE SURE IT IS NOT PLUGGED. I CHECKED ALL OF THE LINES AND THEY ARE FINE. THE FILTER WAS PUT ON NOT TOO LONG AGO SO I AM POSITIVE THE PUMP WILL HAVE TO BE REMOVED. ARE YOU POSITIVE THAT THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE THE PROBLEM COULD BE? 2 MORE QUESTIONS WHY I HAVE YOU ONLINE. I AM GETTING GREY GOO LIKE SUBSTANCE COMING FROM THE OIL FILLER CAP, WHAT WOULD CAUSE THIS? IT LOOKS LIKE VERY THICK GREY GREASE OR OIL. I PUT THE CURRENT SHUTTLE BOX IN THIS MACHINE ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO, THAT IS WHY I BOUGHT IT BECAUSE THE CLUTCH PACK HAD EXPLODED FROM BEING PULLED DOWN THE ROAD IN GEAR. I PUT A USED ONE IN THAT I GOT FROM TEXAS AND IT HESITATES WHEN YOU PULL THE SHUTTLE LEVER BACK TO GO INTO REVERSE. IT HESITATES A COUPLE OF SECONDS AND THEN DECIDES TO SHIFT AND GO. IT ONLY DOES THIS IN REVERSE. SOMETIMES IT TAKES QUITE SOME TIME WHEN IT IS COLD. ONE MORE THING, HOW WOULD YOU BLOCK THE HYDRAULIC LINES WHEN YOU REMOVE THEM FROM THE PUMP, I DON'T WANT TO LOOSE ALL OF THAT EXPENSIVE HYD. FLUID. THANKS FOR THE HELP. ANY INFO. WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. ANDY FROM INDIANA

Forgot to say above make sure that the oil filter is clean and no pipe is bent or squashed blocking the oil from getting from the shuttle to the pump as it would suck in the steering oil.

I GOT THE PUMP OFF TODAY AND THERE IS A BRASS BUSHING THAT WAS WORN OUT AND HAD GOT INTO THE ALUMINUM AND HAD SEVERAL SHAVINGS THAT HAD DESTROYED THE SEAL BETWEEN THE TWO PUMPS. YOU HIT THE NAIL RIGHT ON THE HEAD ONCE AGAIN AJ. THANKS AGAIN VERY MUCH AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK FROM ACROSS THE POND. CHEERS ANDY
