Looking at a 555a hoe with 4 in1 and exthoe. I have heard the engines were a problem and trannys were tough / expensive to fix. but for that era didn't all machines have problems? he says its an 84 but thought they only made the 555a until 81? if they did make them until 84 did they use the same engine?

so stay away or get it? the other choices for that era would be case 580c and jd 310a.

Hi Greg. I couldn't tell you what parts cost for these..It's been at least 8 years since I've done one..I can't remember anything other than the torque converter that will cause a noise when it warms up..The reverser assembly comes out the front with both clutch packs on the same shaft assembly.. There isn't too much involved in rebuilding these clutch packs... The hardest part of the job for me is reaching the rear fuel tank bolts..sounds strange but true..unless someone before you left the rear bolts out.....There are 2 banjo fittings on the reverser case that have to come out because they have long tubes that go into the clutch assembly...You can't pull the clutches out without these fittings removed.. Hope I shed some light on the subject....Roy

Hi Greg. One of the things you really, really have to look out for on Ford machines is the swivel pins and bushes on the front axle. The pins are about half the size they should be for a machine of that weight and the bushes are too short lengthwise and far too close together.
I've seen (and repaired) several Ford 'hoes that have either worn the pin down to the point of breakage (leaving the machine minus wheel), siezed the bush to the pin and torn it out of the wheel carrier (usually damaging the carrier and requiring sleeving to take a new bush) or frequently both at the same time on opposite wheels... All of which can be delayed, but seldom totally avoided, by the driver greasing the front axle religiously and regularly. The rest of the machine isn't actually too bad though...
I haven't had much contact with JD hoes, but the Case machines (580D's mostly) I've seen have been pretty good.
Cheers, JV3CII.

One used backhoe is as good as an other..Ford made a real good backhoe back then.. I've done several shuttle shifts in 555's-655's.. They're not any worse than others to repair..Case makes a good backhoe..I could never figure out how to split up 3 levers between 2 hands..and sheesh , about foot swing..I still can't run one of these.. Why did Case put the boom cylinders on the outside of the backhoe boom ? They are tough to see around while digging . The later Case hoes are as good as any built..Deere made a good backhoe..They can be problematic in the hydraulic department.. If I had my "druthers" I think I would go with the Ford from my own personal experience.. The downside to Ford is they don't have removable cylinder liners as the others. If the block gets a porosity in the cylinder , the block must be removed to be bored and sleeved to bring the bore to original size..I don't have year of manufacture specs here in the house, If you absolutely need them I can go out to my shop and look them up later..Good Luck..
