951B - In the Grey

Help... I have recently purchased a 951B loader. I knew I was going to have to replace the link assembly and sprocket but I did not know I was going to have the following problem. I'm getting conflicting information from part's dealers on the year and type of undercarriage that came on this machine. The serial # is 69H1317. I've been told that this is a grey market machine - sold or manufactured in Europe (had LEVERTON on a label - been bought by Finney - tried them through email - no response). One dealer wants to sell me a 39 link assembly w/ a 6.91 pitch (sprocket to match) and another one is trying to sell me a 40 link assembly w/ a 6.75 pitch (sprocket to match). I have searched the web and made many calls but I cannot determine the year of the machine or the correct (original) undercarriage. I have been told (and I don't know if this is correct but it sounds reasonable) that as long as the sprocket matches the link assembly then it would not matter which way I went... is this a true statement? Is the later (I believe D5) 39 link undercarriage better than the older (I believe D6) 40 link undercarriage? Will this have any effect on the torque at the pad/ground of the machine (w/ a different pitch? - I know changing tires on an car changes the effective gear ratio)? Will my pads (currently have a 40 link assembly - Berco CR2000) bolt up to a 39 link assembly (fyi.. one salesman came and took measurements - claims that the sprocket appears to be for a 6.91 pitch even though it has the 40 link assembly on the machine - sprockets are worn past being pointed or sharp - more like bumps now)? Any preference over Berco versus Nexus (Cat Classic). Lots of questions I know. Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry Wes I am not familiar with the Nexus brand and can"t comment,a lot of contractors here in the UK use Berco undercarriage as an alternative to Cat and it seems to hold up well,when you mentioned why did Cat offer the two different chains put me thinking,the original 40 link chain had a sprocket with an even amount of teeth,this ment that there was no "hunting tooth",which means that the bushes runs in every second tooth of the sprocket and in order to change that the track had to be slackened and jump a tooth to get the use of the untouched teeth,a sprocket with an uneven amount of teeth the bushes still runs in every second tooth but will alternate every revolution spreading the wear over all the teeth,so that may be why the chains were changed,if your pads don"t match the 39 link chain that option is not open to you,the serial number of the machine is the only way I know of ID"ing it.

Leverton was a UK Cat dealer,the machine would have built by Cat in France,if you are going to replace the chains you will be using your old pads so you need the same chains as is on the machine now,all of the 951B"s Iv"e retracked had 40 link chains,I don"t know if the pads would fit a 39 link but I doubt it,Berco would would be my choice after Cat for the spares.

When you say "Berco would would be my choice after Cat for the spares" do you mean Cat original parts or even Cat Classic which is made by Nexus (If I spelled that right). I have never owned a Cat loader before but in my mind I rank them as Cat original, Berco, then Cat Classic, then the rest but I realize I've got a lot to learn. I would also like to share a quote from Troy Morschauser on topic "955L and 951 track interchange" "Hello John. 951B&C have a D5 undercarriage. The early series 951B has a old D6 undercarriage. The 955L also has a series split, old is a D5 undercarriage, newer is the D6C bottom. Difference between D5 & D6 the pitch is the same the size of the bushing is larger on the D5.
The D5 is completly smaller than the D6C pitch,pin&bushing,rail width etc."... This also added to my confusion. If this is true how can I correctly identify my machine? Why did Cat change the undercarriage?
