Folks I have a 1976 JD 350B wide track dozer. It has narrow tracks, 14" tracks on the unit. Since I have the 14" tracks already I would like to convert this to a normal track crawler.

Does anybody have any experience with this or know where to look and what parts would be needed.

Thanks,
Glen

You mentioned earlier about being concerned about the tilt of your track-frame. I assume you know this, unless something is bent or broken, any tilt will be a result of general wear from two places - at the two main points of attachment. #1 the round solid steel crossbar towards the rear that fits through a hole in the track-frame, and #2 the cast crossbar in the front that bolts to the track-frame. With number 1, often the bar gets worn, and the hole in the track-frame gets worn, things get sloppy, and the frame cocks or tilts. The wide track extension drive-shaft, where is attaches to the final-drive, has a large universal-joint that allows for tilt and mis-alignment. Most wear that causes tilting can be fixed by building up the worn areas with weld, no parts needed. In regard to the price of parts, I priced some used parts this moring for the wide-track 350. You can buy the entire extension assembly, including the flex-joint that bolts to the final drive, the extension shaft, and the outboard pillow-block bearing assembly for $300 total.

I've never changed one over, but I've had plenty of both versions apart. To covert a wide model to the standard, There is at least one major part that has to be changed, the crossbar that the track frame bolts to. The round solid steel bar that attaches to the rear of the track frames is also different, but can be cut shorter instead of replacing it. The track-frames may be different also, and I'm not sure if you can modifyt them to fit the standard crossbar. As far as all else, I think it just takes removing some bolt-on parts. The sprockets are attached to bolt-on extensions and bearing carriers. Just take the extensions and the bearing-carriers off, and bolt the sprockets directly to the final-drive axle. As far a finding the used parts - in this case, the crossbar and maybe the two track-frames - they should be easy to find. I know where there are plenty in my area - central New York. I was at a tractor junkyard today and saw at least a dozen 350s scrapped out. Price is a different matter. I just bought a track-frame today for my Allis HD4 and paid $500 for it. Just keep in mind that the crossbars are "wear items', we used to change a lot of them. Most of the 350 series, except the first, did not bolt the crossbar tight to the track-frames. It floated - to avoid cracking - by using dowels. So, they hammered back and forth and got worn. Usually, if you get a worn one, you can build it back up with hard-surfacing rod. Some people just bolt them fast - like the first 350s were, or the 1010s - but then other things tend to crack.

Thanks for the info. Another gentleman pointed out since I have the 14" tracks it might be less expensive in the long run to convert this. I'll take your info and do some homework. If you have some info on salvage yards in your area I'd greatly appreciate it since I am in driving distance from you.
You can e mail me through this service.
Thanks again.
Glen
