I am looking at a bobcat 743B with 3400 hours on it.
What should I look out for before purchasing it?
What at 3400 hours of usage is typicly wore out, chain drive etc?

If it's possible for you to try the machine out for a day before purchasing I would recommend it.
743B's are late 80's, early 90's vintage machines so 3400 hrs would not be excessive hours for it.
Run the machine 2-3 hours, work it, get it warm find yourself a dirt pile or bank or something it's not going to move, put the bucket into it and see if it will still spin the tires. It's probably going to want to choke the engine if it gets traction but thats ok too it's showing you that the hydrostatics still have good pressure.
What you dont want is for it to sit there and the tires just quiver and dont spin at all.
BTW skid-steers need to be operated for the most part at or near full throttle.
The chains probably are getting tired by now (3400 hrs) if they have not been replaced already.
Tracks over the tires are the worst thing you can do for the longevity of the drive system of a skid-steer.
Prior maintenance is going to be the key on how much life is left in it.

I sold New Holland Skid steers back in the early 90's.. When we sold a skid steer , it usually got tracks.. Most of these machines did construction work..I.E. septic installations , sewer , building backfill jobs, concrete tear-outs.. At 2000 hrs. most of these machines were junk or close to it...I'm not saying these were the weaklinks of the breed..I'm just saying these machines were built to clean barns , not go where a crawler loader won't go..Some age more gracefully than others because of the application they were put to...Back then the biggest problems were the metallic particles floating around in the chain boxes from worn out chains..These machines also used the chainbox oil in the hydrostatics , causing premature failure in hydrostatics and loader hydraulics....

With normal care, nothing should be worn out. I've got 3800 hrs on a Gehl 4625SX- total repairs since I've had it (bought at 1100? hrs)- 7 years ago: Cracked manifold (due to bad mounting), one elec block heater, one hydraulic solenoid...about it.
