My 450 brakes don't work,it can be operated without brakes but I have heard it is bad for the finals to switch from hi to lo just to turn the machine, I also have trouble finishing slow curved contours without them. Anyone with operating experience with input.

if they came with it they should work.i added a new master cly to the left brake and put that one on the right.brakes are ok.i added grouser bars to mine and they dig in almost like dozer pads.im screening top soil and it easier to lock up the track in tight turning than wide high/low.just like that leaking cly, just keep adding oil.once you repack a cly its gets as easy to fix than to add oil.

I've got an older Case 450 that also had brake problems. I had to fix the brakes on this machine because they were stuck "on" and were heating up. The smell was not the best either.

In regards to using the brakes, I hardly ever use them. I do make a lot of use of the neutral sector on one track at a time in order to make smoother turns. I can see the arguement that shifting from hi to low is hard on the finals, but as long as the machine is not being shifted under a heavy load and high throttle I think its probably acceptable.

I seem to recall reading in the operators manual that the brakes are ment to be used only occasionally to make especially tight turns.
