using our machine last weekend, and all of the sudden the engine started overrevving and running rough and would not shut off. Put it in gear and started moving to slow the engine down and it finally died and would not re start. Obviously overfueling for some reason. Does this sound like injector pump problem?

Thanks

It sounds like a governor problem to me but it's not a text book case you have. If the governor lost control of the fuel rack it would likely have blown the engine apart. Was there a big cloud of BLACK smoke coming out of the stack? Do Not attemp to restart it, get some one to look at it that Knows Governors. That is a slow turning engine and you have likely bent the exh valves if it overreved.

Initially when it it happened some black smoke came out, but not for long. It was over reving but running erratically, like perhaps it was not all of the cylinders getting to much fuel? It lasted about 2 minutes and then just died, but I had the throttle on shut off and the run lever turned off when it died. Hopefully I didn't do any major engine damage. This machine is in great condition, used no oil etc, but had been running a little rough at idle, so thought we had an injector problem we were going to have to address. Wonder if a bad injector nozzel into the cylinder could cause such a thing allowing too much fuel to dump into a cylinder, and since it was already running, it just took off until the fuel burned out?

Plan to talk to catepillar mechanic about the problem. Thanks for your thoughts on the matter. Mark

Take off the valve cover and check for bent pushrods. If the pistons hit the valves they will be bent and should have extra clearance now. Also the rocker arms could have been bent if you had it on decompression. The exh valves get hit on over reving. If you have rough idleing the governor may not be working too smoothly.
