HD4 Track tightening advice

Hi Guys, I have a beauty little AC HD4 with Hoe... One track is pretty loose and needs to be tightened....

1) I have tried to tighten the long hex shaft with a 1 1/2" wrench and busted the wrench, should I be afraid to really torque it? will I damage anything or will pouring some coal to it move the threads? of course I'll soak it with penetrating oil etc first?

2) Also this loose track seems to have an excessively worn brake band, is the loose track and worn brake band related in any way? the other side seems much better, guess it could be that the prior operator used the right side more than left.

3) where does a guy get a Brake band for the HD4 or do I get it rebuilt?

Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike, Not sure if you did this or not, but to turn the big hex shaft you need to loosen the two 9/16 bolts (they maybe 1/2 but I don"t think so). They are connected to two oval shaped steel plates that lock the shaft in place like a jam-nut. The shaft goes through these plates and back to the large tension spring. You don"t need to take the bolts out they just need to be loose and so do the plates. You値l probably need to spray some rust buster on them to get them freed up. Hope this helps you out.
As for the brake band you can have them rebuilt.
One of the guys that I think can be a great resource on this page is Jdemaris but I知 sure somebody can help you better then me on this.

Most of the time, the original adjusters are stripped on the HD4s (or H4s). If it's still original, the hex-shaft with threads at the end is supposed to turn, and the stationary nut is bolted to the front-idler bracket. So, try putting some heat on the nut, or better yet, heat it until it starts to get orange, and then hit it with cold water. If it is stripped, it's pretty easy to make a new adjuster with some Grade 8 or B7 threaded rod and nuts - with 1 1/2" diam. rod by 6 threads per inch. The brake band has nothing to do with the loose track. I assume you already tried adjusting it with a 3/4" wrench? Usually, replacement entails buying a new lining kit for $60 from AGCO - it comes with rivets. To remove the band - it depends on what's in there. Some machines have two-piece bands that come apart at the bottom and can be removed without taking the steering clutches apart. But most are one-piece, and to remove, you have to pull the steering-clutch assembly out.

Well that sounds pretty good, I'll take a crack at it.

Thanks so much just needed a little pep talk.

I bought this hd a year ago or so it only has 500 hrs on it and a hoe attachment, it's still kinda shiny.... sweet little thing
