JD450 steering

Hi everyone,

I have just removed the blade and chassis frame on my JD450 and have connected the bucket. I don't know if the dozer blade and frame are orginal equipment or not. However, the bucket works fine and I am sure it is the first time it has been connected and used in a number of years (I bought this machine off an 88 yr old guy, who had trouble walking).

Using it for the first time yesterday, I seem to have developed a problem when steering the unit. Using the control levers(2) I find the left side one works fine. Using the right one causes the engine to stall if I don't have throttle around 1/2 or more. Would this be something simple as a clutch adjustment or something more serious? Otherwise the machine seems to run fine going both forward and reverse. Machine is capable of lifting the bucket full (about 1.75 yards) of wet clay, so the hydraulics are not too bad.

I don't have anything more than an operators manual and a few pics given to me by an aquaintence, to work with. Is there an adjustment for the clutch - I assume that operating (pulling on ) one of the steering levers causes a clutch to disengage and the brake to work, both at the same time, to allow the other track to slew or turn the machine in the direction required.

Sorry about the long winded write up - I am new to all this and am looking for any help others can offer.

Thanks in advance, for any comments - much appreciated.

John.

PS: - thanks Roy, for the schematic you sent me, it was received OK.

The possible causes are many. Keep in mind though, that Deere uses steering de-clutching and braking in the same control lever. So, if the steering clutch is not disengaging before the brake grabs - it will labor and fight itself. If that is the problem, all it needs is adjustment. Easiest way to check if correct is get the crawler on a steep hill facing up. Have it in a forward gear and start going up the hill. Then, pull back slowly on the steering clutches. There should be a point in their travel that the machine not only stops going forward, it should start to roll backwards a little. This tells you that the clutches are disengaging properly before the brakes are grabbing.

Hi JD,

I had a go at adjusting the clutch and brake linkages. I was fortunate to have the respective pages given to me with some other stuff, some while back. However, I could do with a maintenance manual for this machine.

I had to do the job twice as I forgot about the brake band lever screw. Anyway, there is a noticeable improvement, but I have yet to try it outside (a quick check in the workshop and it seems better). I notice the brake bands appear to be about 3/16" thick - what would the thickness be new and what should they be replaced at.

I would appreciate any help or advice that you guys could pass this way. I have never worked on one of these machines before, so eveything I do is for the first time. Needless to say, some things will need to be done more than once, to get them right.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any help.

J.
