If your head is cracked (which I have heard is a frequent problem), I had mine welded at Chapin Machine and Welding in Chapin,IL. It set me back about $600.00, but they welded and resurfaced it, and did a good job. I don't have the number right here in front of me, but I can find it afterwhile if you are interested.
Good luck!

I had to get a head for my HD4 last month. At the time, three places that I deal with had heads for HD3s and HD4s. Prices ranged from $500 at Mcfadden's in Sharon Springs, New York, to $350 at Marshals Machinery in PA. Wengers in PA wanted $400 and only sell used heads bare - i.e. with valves, springs, retainers, removed. In my area, I guess Marshals is the best bet - but $350 is still a lot of money for a used head. HD4 is a 200 c.i. engine. HD3 has the smaller D15 engine, so it's probably more common.

Here's a guess. A Deere 1010 diesel crawler-loader weighs 9400 lbs. and is the same weight bare as an HD3. Without attachments they both weigh 7600 lbs. So, it's probably in the 9400-10,000 lb. range not counting counter-weights if it has any.
