Hello:

I recently bought a OC-3 with a loader on it. The machine is in very nice shape, except it need some work on the transaxle I think. It only moves when on of the steering levers is pulled back. Otherwise, the imput shaft to the tranny is spinning, but no movement untill I pull a lever. Previous owner included another transaxle assembly, but I would like to investiget this one first.

Also, any ideas a a good book for these tractors, and the differences between the years?
Any ideas on a auxilarly tranny for one? I know they are pricey.

Thanks
-John

Besides what has already been mentioned, the differential sometimes falls apart inside because the long bolts that hold it all together come loose and fall out. Just take the back cover off and look inside. Also, keep in mind - it is JUST a differential, and don't believe the claims often heard that it provides two track drive - the HGs and OC3s never did and never will if kept original. It is a Clark transaxle and also used in some wheel tractors and snow-cats. The original aux. trans. setup that was sold by Oliver was made by Trasco and used a Ford Model A three-speed car transmission. I've made the setup on several crawlers - so it can be done without any high-tech engineering. I gave my plans out and a few people who used them may have made their own enhancements to my design. I also have the original paperwork and plans for the Oliver Trasco setup - but I don't like the way it was designed. And there are differences over the years for all the HGs and OC3s, but minor ones - including how the engine is bolted in, engine model and cooling system, the types of front idler wheels, the final drive castings, etc. But, with just the OC3 series - they are all pretty much the same as well as late model HGs.

Your problem is pretty common with HG/OC3 tractors when the drive is interupted on one side. The easiest to check is the studs that hold the drive sprockets onto the hubs. They are often sheared off. Even if they are still in place check the nut torque just to avoid future problems.
If internal, the possibilities are a broken axle, bull gear or similar (pricey) failure.
