Well I took the engine back to Milton CAT in Binghamton so they could make it right. They told Dad they would make it right or give us another motor. When I got there the mechanic started looking it over and asking questions like I had done something wrong. But I wouldn't have any of that so I explained that I had the same shop service manuel that he did and I had brought it with me to show him if he would like. I explained that I did every thing by the book down to torquing the bolts on the covers. I asked him if they ever got things that were f---ed like this and he said no Cat never sends faulty things and I replied well somebody screwed this one up. Well before I got home (its 120 miles one way) they called Dad and told him they couldn't decide what was wrong with it so they were sending it to Syracuse for them to figure out why the valves hit the pistons. Sounds like it might be gone awhile but what's another week the D3 has been broken for like 4 years. At least I'm getting good at tearing it down it only took my SIL and me 2 hours and 20 minutes to have the engine setting on the floor this time.

No they didn't the mechanic was re-bushing the front on a D7R and didn't seem like he wanted to work on it with me there. I was hoping they would so I could see what happened.

The direct pistons can go in the wrong way they have no valve relief in them. Not sure about the precup ones. You should have felt resistance turning it over if it was that bad though. Likely the block has been shaved too much cleaning up the deck. 3116/ 3126 engines have a thicker head gasket to use with machined blocks but never heard of one for a 3200 engine. Contrary to what he told you ANYONE can make a mistake.
Good luck with it.

Yes Bob there was some resistance a TDC but it came out of the box that way and this is the first Cat engine that I have worked on. So I guess my mistake was thinking that it was strange but not questioning it. They sent it that way so i thought must be thats the way they are and I couldn't compare it to the old engine as the rod was sticking out the side. I guess that would be my bad by spending all that time putting it together and putting it in. I would say that i am more familiar with our old MF and JD dozers mainly because I don't get much wrench time on the CATs compared to the others. I would say that outside of this engine that in the long run that a Cat machine is less expensive than the others.

Murray, I would bet money that block shouldn't have been reused. When they get things straightened out it would be a good time to hit them for the loan of the timing fixture for all the extra work they caused you. Be carefull seating the timing cover the last little bit, the oil pump drive gear has to mesh with the crank gear. Any resistance, wiggle the gear a bit untill it goes free or you could chip a tooth on the oil pump.

They have the whole engine now right down to the flywheel and injector lines even the filters so hopefully they will have it all assembled when we get it back for our troubles. But i aint holding my breath. I had to disassemble and clean everything from the old engine as the nitwit ran it after the piston broke until he saw the oil coming out all-over everything. So everything was a mess. I spent several hours on the oil pump cleaning and checking tolerances. One nice thing about the Cat service manual is that it easy to follow and gives you every bit of info you need.

Murray, pay close attention to the angle bracket under the fuel pump. Make sure it is not worn too bad or replace it. They work loose and that causes the drive adapter housing to crack where it mounts to the timing cover plate.
