John Deere 450 steering problems:

Hi,
I am helping a neighbor on his John Deere 450 crawler. The number on the machine is as follows: Model 406 64870 (from a note in their user manual, 1956 or 1959) 450 Type 5F3M S/N 086408T.

The first thing we noticed was the power steering was dry. We filled the reservoir but that didn’t seem to make a difference. They had been having trouble with the steering in the past and had replaced the clutches and brake bands. It has always seemed to work ok in reverse but forward is a problem. I went through the book and made all of the adjustments in the order specified. They worked good for a while, then the left side quit working, clutch engaging but no brake.

The next thing we noticed was the master brake rod on the left side of the machine (side where the clutch is) was locked where the rod connects on the bottom of the housing. While trying to free that up the yoke broke so we unhooked that rod and reconnected the other side. Every time we make the adjustments it seems to work for a while but then something changes and we are back where we started. Any help would be much appreciated.
Gary

Thanks Roy, I'll check that out. We did try to watch the top for the free travel but don't remember seeing the throwout bearing move. I'll look closer and see if it makes a difference. Gary

Older 450's can be a little problematic adjusting steering clutches..The book shows all the steps necessary to adjust them clutches....But , they don't take into account worn linkages..When you adjust free-play you will have to look into the steering clutch housing thru the top covers and physically watch parts moving inside...Pull the lever back slightly back and forth and you can see the throwout bearing move and make contact with the clutch fingers..The book gives you a dimension for this but it could be double that amount because of worn linkages..Next , back off the 5/16" bolt there on top..Maybe a turn or two..Next tighten the brake band till it stops than back it off one turn or so.Try the lever, the clutch should start to disconnect then the brake band will apply. If the brake band applies too early the machine will " snap " or turn abruptly when you try to feather the clutch. If there isn't enough brake to turn with the clutch pulled fully , you might have to tighten the 5/16" bolt a little.. I've seen other problems caused from the brake band springs broken or left out. This causes inconsistant braking..Also on the linkage shaft inside the top cover [ where the 5/16" bolt is ]. One of those cast knuckles is supposed to be free to turn on the shaft , while the other is keyed to the shaft...Hope that helps a little.... Oil from the power steering reservoir usually leaks into the engine from bad bushings and seals in the pump. The pump is fastened to the engine front cover..This allows hydraulic oil to get into the crankcase..Unless it's leaking somewhere externally..When they work correctly there is a " shudder " in the steering lever when you pull it back..A little annoying but it works..Good Luck.....Roy

We are still having trouble with the steering on a John Deere 450. We adjusted the clutches and brakes by watching the throw out bearing and it worked for a while but then the brake band broke on the left side. The band had plenty left on it but was thin on the top. Their was a spring that had broken and fallen into the housing, could this have been why it did not wear evenly and was hard to adjust? We also noticed that with the brake band off the whole housing, clutches and everything seem to be loose, you can move it by shaking it or operating the hand lever. Is this because the brake band is off or should we look for a bad bearing, etc.
