I just installed a head on my hd-5 (Detroit Diesel) and torqued to 190 foot pounds as suggested earlier. The head was off of a parts machine. I had to take the valve rocker arm assemblies off.

What is the torque on the rocker arm bolts?

I do not have a complete maintenance manual, however it says to set the valves hot clearance for .009, I do not have it running, so I set for cold and will recheck after it gets warmed up.

Or should I adjust open a bit further to allow for expansion, then readjust after warmup?

I"m not too clear on how to adjust the fuel injector rocker arm. Can someone explain this using layman"s terms?

Thanks, any help will be most appreciated.

Mike

The injectors rocker arms are adjusted with a timing pin. Do you have the pin?

No, I do not have the pin to adjust the injectors, but I do have a micrometer that can be adjusted to the suggested length.

Can you explain the procedure?

My book says to adjust the rocker arms on the valves to .009 hot when they are closed. I adjusted them cold and opened them up a bit until I can start the engine and bring it up to temp., then I will readjust.

Let me know if you can explain the injector setting?

Thanks,

Walt

You need to get someone qualified to run the overhead on this head before even attempting to start this engine. Simply switching heads (I do not know which rocker arms and injectors you are using) is probably not the easiest task on a Jimmy. Which injectors did you use? Are you using the same ones that originally were on the engine? If not are they the same number as the ones you had? The rocker arms need to be backed off before turning the engine over. Otherwise you are taking a risk of damaging valves, injectors, or pushrods. You need to get in contact with a esperienced detroit dsl.tech. to set the valves, rockers, and time the injectors properly. If this is not done correctly, serious damage could be done!!!!! By the way, a standard or general clearance for valves is to add .002 to the spec to allow for heat expansion, since this calls for .009 you should set it to .011 to allow for expansion. BUT, do not do this by yourself without having an understanding of the valve timing, or having a service manual with you. Bigj

Thanks for your reply.

Same head, valves, injectors, etc.

Started out with rocker adjustments completely open. Adjusted valves for .009, but will open a bit until I am ready to run it and bring it up to temperature. Then readjust for .009 when hot.

I missing the part in my manual about the injector timing adjustment, anyone out there have the adjustment.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike
