Have my short block assembled; checking everything as I go. I set the rebuilt (original) head on and looked down the oil hole (drilled passage) in the rear of the head; the oil hole in the head does not align with the oil passage in the block. This is the oil passage that goes up the block thru the head to lubricate the rocker assembly. This misalignment btwn the oil passages is off by almost 1/4 inch. As I look down the drilled oil passage in the head with a flashlight, I can only see a slight crack where the two oil holes barely match up. I remember in earlier posts, jdemaris mentioned many factory production tolerances which were way over reasonable levels. Apparently this is what I have in this instance. I plan to elongate each drilled oil hole, north on one and south on the other where they meet , (using a die grinder) about 1/16 of an inch, so I will have at least an 1/8 inch clear oil passage btwn the block and head to give an adequate oil supply to the rocker arm assembly. The Block s/n# 4302930 and Head casting,# A 150384 are correct for this engine. The rockers were getting some oil before the engine stuck (spun bearing) but there was wear on the rocker assembly and one broken spring retainer. Has anyone else had this problem?

Dave,

When I rebuilt my 188 I seem to recall reading that there were two styles of head designs and that they fed oil to the rocker arms via different channels. I also seem to recall that on mine there was a bolt with a hole drilled in it to provide the passage. I'll have to consult the manual again.

John- I have the later head which has the oil passage at the rear of the head up thru the drilled bolt that holds the rear rocker arm bracket to the head. I think I will have sufficient oil flow thru the head and thru the drilled bolt and to the rocker shafts. I just opened up the oil entrance passage at the head slightly. If I now get too much oil upstairs, I can always put a restrictor in the head under the drilled bolt to slow the flow.

I thought also at first that the misalignment btwn the head and engine block oil holes might have been intentional, but where the oil goes up into the head, it goes into and thru the drilled bolt that holds the rear rocker arm bracket, so the drilled bolt hole (approx. 1/16 inch)is self limiting as to oil flow. In any event, I was able to get a decent passage by elongating the hole slightly on the cylinder head only. I now have about a 1/16 larger space to improve the oil flow to the rocker bolt. I didn't open the oil hole too much, just enough to improve the oil flow. I bought this skidsteer with a stuck engine. It had spun a rod bearing but it seemed to me that the rockers were running with minimal oil for a long time; one spring retainer was broken almost in half but it was still attached to the spring and valve and there was also a broken valve guide.

i'M A ROOKIE ON THE CASE 188 AS FAR AS O/HAUL GOES HAVE ONE IN MY 1080B TRACK HOE. cOULD IT BE THE FASCTORY WAY OF LIMITING THE AMOUNT OF OIL TO THE UPPER PART OF THE ENGINE? mY PAST EXPERIENCE ON GAS ENGINES, WE HAD TO LIMIT THE AMOUNT AS IT WOULD COLLECT IN VALVE COVER AND BE SUCKED DOWN INTAKE VALVE. jUST A THOUGHT. i'M SURE SOME OF THESE GUYS WILL KNOW. mY ENGINE WAS REBUILT BY A CO. IN Alabama it's has been a jewel so far.
