LAST NOVEMBER, I ASKED ABOUT MY 955K LOSING TRANS FLUID INTO THE STEERING CLUTCHES.BOB/ONT SAID TO CHECK THE FILTER SCREEN FOR THE STEERING PUMP;IT MAY BE CLOGGED WITH BRAKE LINING MATERIAL.I CHECKED AND CLEANED IT ; IT WAS CLOGGED SOLID.SO,THANKS, BOB/ONT,AND,IF I MAY ASK,WHAT IS INVOLVED IN CHANGING THE BRAKE LININGS? WILL THE STEERING PUMP SEAL BE OK NOW? AND, ARE THEY BANDS OR SHOES OR?
ALSO ,WHEN I CHECK THE TRANS FLUID,SHOULD THE ENGINE BE RUNNING? HOT OR COLD?
THANKS,MARK.

The trans, engine and hyd oils are checked with the engine running, best to top off when at operating temp. Changing the brake bands is a lot of heavy lifting. I would recomend having a good smooth concrete pad and to work on and an A frame with a chain hoist. Have some blocks to set fuel tank on so the valves on the bottom don't get broken and all the fuel run out. Clean the top cover off very good so you find all the bolts and get them out. The cover is on dowels and needs to be pryed up off them before lifting. Pry by hand and make sure it moves before forcing things. A bolt missed and too much force can result in a broken cover(EXPENSIVE). When you get the cover off take and store a pic of the bevelgear shaft. Use this for refference so you get the bevelgear back in on the correct side. Then take a dial indicator and check the backlash in the teeth and record that too if you don't have a manual. Now if all this work scares you, you could continue useing it and clean the screen occasionally. May find it doesn't clog up too fast now if you are not useing it all day every day. That screen may not have been out in the last 15 years. If it still steers good and the trans doesn't over heat keep useing it as is. Before you get into the pumps I need to say more.
Later Bob
