Hi All,

I have a old TD-6 I"m trying to ID in case I need to do a head pull or piston job since "unsticking" it. My understanding is this motor was originally a 264 with 3.875 bore but may have/can be sleeved as a 281 with 4in bore. Anyway to tell without actually tearing it apart first ?

hello, when you pop the head off and the liners stick up, then you have the 4" bore which means an expensive hard to get head gasket. first try carb cleaner to get the engine unstuck first. check out the bar starter on my website. unstuck many an engine with that.

Thanks for the info King.. I did get it "unstuck"

It had only sat a year but was so tight it wouldn't budge by hand, starter or dropping in the main clutch when being pushed. All it did was stop BOTH machines cold. ( I guess the main clutch is good ) I ended up pouring in kero, PB and anything else that seemed slippery into the plug holes with it in the gas position ( Valves open) I was able to get it moving slowly by putting a wrench and 6 ft pipe on the front pump coupler. It took a lot of turns but finally got to the point where the starter turns it. Got to do some flushing now to get all the oil out of the combustion chamber before trying to fire it. Hard to believe it doesn't damage the sleeve or rings when ripping on them like this ?

ok that is excellent that you got it flipping over. now how did it get stuck, water down the exhaust pipe???? if it is water down the exhaust pipe it might have pitted a value. so when you get it running and you have a FOO out of the exhaust pipe, that means the value is pitted and not seating. try setting the values before you rip the head off. also wait until you don't need the machine because you might have to wait for a gasket. or you can do what we do on these winter freighting cats is use avaition gasket goo and soak the head gasket down. we don't spend moneyy on these cats because we take them swimming, LOL

Finally got this thing started. Can't believe it only sat a year. Interesting thing I found after I got it turning decent with the starter..

It would NOT start on gas. I check the starting valves, plugs, mag for spark etc. It seemed to fire on one cylinder (soot on plug) but wold not light the rest. I noticed one cylinder would blow my finger out of the hole with compression while the other three would not. I ended up making a air hose adapter to hook up to the plug holes and put each cylinder at TDC to check for leakage. Turns out all the air was coming out the exhaust manifold. The one good one had a little leakage into the crankcase (air out the oil filler tube) and would actually move the piston down a little when the 130 psi was applied. I found those three cylinders had ZERO cold tappet clearance and had to back the adjusters of a couple turns. You could actually hear the air stop leaking as I was turning the adjusters ! Did these parts(pushrods)grow ? I suspect someone was messing with it but the guy told me it ran "fine" when he shut it off last year.. Anyway..after that fix it started on gas in 3 turns and diesel a few minutes after that. Still have a stuck injector it seems and more smoke than I care for, lots of bypass coming out the breather tube too but it's getting there. Guy
