Just started using my D7E after a complete overhaul and noticed the water pressur guage goes into the yellow portion of the guage as she starts to push hard.It seems to go all the way to the end as I am using it.Can this be problematic if I keep on going with it this way?Thankyou for any help you can give.Dave Ahlgren

Hi, Daveminn. If you have standard Cat guages, which it sounds as if you do, you should notice that they are color-coded. There are corresponding colors on both guages. If the temp. gets into the yellow and pressure is up there too, nothing to worry about. If the temp. is in the yellow and the pressure is still well down in the white, BE CAREFUL.

If the pressure is going up into the yellow before the temp. gets anywhere near that, you may have a problem as mentioned in the earlier replies, a leak in a pre-com chamber or a poorly fitted head gasket or similar.

From what I remember of those old girls, they didn't normally run hot unless the radiator was pretty choked.

I have to say that I don't like the idea of putting duct tape over the pressure guage. It IS there for a reason.

Hope this helps.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Te water pressre guage is calibrated so that you will know if you are above the boiling point of water. It works like a pressure cooker, you can run the engine as hot as 235°F as long as you maintain 14 PSI.
put a peice of duct tape over the pressure guage and just watch the water temp.

Does it push coolant out when you run it hard??? Did it do this before the overhaul???I ran into a 6 that had a cracked head..It pushed water out only after running it for 20 minutes, not before...It ran warm but not hot till it spilled it's guts all over the ground..... Could be compression getting into coolant ,. maybe from pre-combustion chambers....Many machine shops don't check pre-combustion chambers for cracks when cylinder head work is performed...
