HD4 Steering clutch question/concern

I wanted to adjust my steering clutch, I started to make the adjustment at the side according to the manual. the left steering clutch seems to engage disengage ok, but the right clutch seems like it's got trouble...

I set the lever so it has about 3 1/2" free play as indicated in the manual. But when I pull the lever with the tracks elevated the clutch does not seem to fully disengage when the lever is pulled, the track does not stop, although the track can be stopped with a touch of the the brake. What is more troubling is that when the clutch lever is not pulled... the track can be stopped with minimal pressure on the brake alone. This differs drastically from the left track, when the left track is rolling, the clutch is pulled it rolls to idle and when the clutch is not pulled it is VERY hard to stop with the brake alone..

I pulled the clutch adjustment bolt fully out and noticed that it has oil deposit on it...

should the clutch have oil anywhere near it, could it cause slippage when the clutch is engaged, could this be why the clutch is easy to stop with the brake alone.

I also noticed that the machine drifted more to one side when under load and that the right track did not have the torque that the right one did.

can I flush out the clutch with gas or am I into a clutch job. If I'm into a clutch job how tough and how expensive is it, all I hear is nitemares about steering clutch jobs.

ps What is the apeture right behind clutch adjustment bolt?

Clutches come out through the top. You unbolt the clutch-brake-drum on one side, and on the other - you pull off the little lock pin and slide the splined stub shaft into the ring-gear carrier assembly to get it out of the way. There should not be any oil in there. Also, early HD4s had trouble with bolts breaking that hold the pressure plate on. Originally, they were only 5/16" bolts. To fix, it gets updated by drilling it out and using Grade 8 3/8" bolts.

In reading all the history files about the sterring clutch dialog, It almost sounds pretty strait forward, can you guys point me in the right direction,

Give me some basic steps so I can start tearing this down, I'll order a service manual but I want to get inside the thing, it sounds like the tracks don't have to come off. How does one get at the clutches for replacement. just a basic description would be appreciated.

on our hd11g which should be similar except for size, it was a matter of taking the covers off which are located under the fuel tank area and then working down in the wells where the steering clutches and brake bands are located. Pretty straight foreward stuff. I cant remember much right now. Just take those covers off and you will get a good idea of what needs to be done.
