955H Cat Engine Rebuild:

Hi,
I have a 955H Cat Trackloader which has worked well for me for about a year. I started having trouble with it not long ago, the head gasket went bad so I replaced it after having the head checked at a machine shop. It ran good for a day then started giving missing and blowing black smoke, same thing as when the head gasket went bad.
I tore it down today, suspecting a sleeve that had slipped but found the head of a valve imbedded in the piston. I have anti-freeze in the oil so guess it is time for a major rebuild. Anyone have suggestions as to where to get the parts? Cat wants $7,000 just for the parts although a local machine shop says they can do the whole job for about $3,500, labor and parts. The labor is just for the sleeves, pistons, bearings, etc. They will take it to what they call a short block and I will put the rest together. Anything I should watch out for? Should I check anything else (transmission, etc) while the engine is out? The transmission is a power shift, 1st & 2nd forward and the same in reverse. My serial number is 60A10479.
Thanks,
Gary H. Thompson

Bob is right don't pull the engine if you get parts from CAT the sleeves will come as one unit with the rod already in the piston just put on o-rings lub them but check the counter bore on the block to see if one sleeve is to high or low .

This sound like an inframejob. So you dropped a valve, it punched a hole in the head. Piston and sleeves, rod bearings roll in a set of mains. I would not pull the engine. If the transmission isnot giving trouble, leave it alone, change the oil and filters check the linkage and replace any worn parts
